Chopra hangs on to win delayed event

Daniel Chopra tapped in for par, then pumped his right fist into the air.

Finally, victory was his.

Chopra re-claimed the outright lead with a birdie at the par-5 16th hole Monday morning and held on to win the oft-delayed Ginn sur Mer Classic at Port St. Lucie, Fla., edging Fredrik Jacobsen and Shigeki Maruyama by one shot for his first PGA Tour triumph.

Chopra finished at 19 under, becoming the 12th first-time winner on tour this season.

The win came in Chopra's 133rd career start, and the $810,000 winner's check pushed his career earnings to just shy of $5 million.

Westlake High's Charlie Wi tied for fifth six strokes back and won $158,063.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR admits water got in fuel supply

NASCAR has its own "Water-gate."

The racing organization conceded that water got into the fuel supply of more than two cars during the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, apparently leading to a crash that took out several top contenders in the closing laps.

Denny Hamlin was leading the Pep Boys Auto 500 with three laps to go when his car stalled while taking the green flag after a caution period. Martin Truex, who led the most laps Sunday, smashed into the back of Hamlin's car and finished 31st. Hamlin slipped to 24th.

Both were in the Chase for the championship.

"There are multiple teams that are showing positive for some level of water contamination level in their fuel," said John Darby, NASCAR's Nextel Cup director. "I can't tell you the exact number. It's more than two and less than (the full field of) 43 at the moment."

Darby dismissed sabotage as a possible explanation, saying too many teams were affected for anyone to have been singled out.

He said extensive testing done by Sunoco, NASCAR's official fuel supplier, showed no signs of problems in the underground storage tanks at the suburban Atlanta speedway. The problem likely occurred in the piping that runs from the tanks to the pumps, or in the pumps themselves, which teams use to fill the high-tech cans that are used for fueling.

TENNIS

Ancic rallies at Paris; Querrey loses

Mario Ancic rallied to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Paris Masters, setting up a match against 2005 champion Tomas Berdych.

Earlier, Andreas Seppi of Italy downed Sam Querry of Thousand Oaks 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, Mardy Fish of the United States fired 19 aces in topping Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 7-6 (7), 6-4, and Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina defeated Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

SOCCER

World Cup ends rotation system

The World Cup will no longer be rotated among continents, a decision that throws open the race for the 2018 tournament.

South Africa already has been awarded the 2010 tournament and soccer's governing body is expected to announce Brazil — the only candidate — as the 2014 host today.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the executive committee rejected a proposal from CONCACAF that would have ensured the 2018 event going to the region representing North and Central America and the Caribbean.

"FIFA's decision does not change our own commitment to try to bring the World Cup back to the United States," U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said. "I believe that a U.S. bid will be very competitive."
