Eads: Marmonte League finish a mad scramble

Absolutely. Without question. Newbury Park High has qualified for the 2007 Northern Division football playoffs.
For five other Marmonte League schools, there is nothing certain for what could be a wild scramble to secure the league's other three available postseason spots.
Scenarios for the six-team scramble are plentiful.
The most likely order of finish: 1. Newbury Park, 7-0; 2. Agoura vs. Westlake winner, 5-2; 3. Moorpark, Agoura vs. Westlake loser, and Simi Valley vs. Thousand Oaks winner.
It could also be: 1. Newbury Park, 7-0 (Marmonte League); 2. Westlake, 6-1; 3. Agoura, Moorpark and Simi Valley vs. Thousand Oaks winner, 4-3.
Or: 1. Newbury Park 6-1; 2. Westlake, 6-1; 3. Thousand Oaks, 5-2; 4. Agoura and Moorpark, 4-3.
Or: 1. Newbury Park 6-1; 2. Moorpark and Agoura or Westlake, 5-2; 4. Agoura or Westlake and Thousand Oaks, 4-3.
Or. 1. Newbury Park, 6-1; 2. Westlake, 5-2; 3. Simi Valley, Agoura, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks, 4-3.
And there's an outside chance for a four-way tie for first place.
Five teams are in that mix.
For that to happen, Newbury Park must lose to Moorpark and Thousand Oaks. That would leave the door open for Thousand Oaks, Agoura, Westlake and Moorpark.
This wildness is not unusual for Marmonte League football.
There was a three-way tie for fourth place in 2006, 2002 and 2001. Two years ago, there were two-way ties for second and fourth. In 2004, there was a three-way tie for third.
The unbeatens: If Newbury Park wins its last two games to finish 10-0, it will extend the area's streak of regular-season unbeaten teams to nine years.
Newbury Park had 10-0 regular-season records in 1997, 1995 and 1993.
Oaks Christian and Westlake entered the 2006 playoffs with 10-0 records. Other area teams to survive a regular season without a loss were: St. Bonaventure (2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999), Oaks Christian (2005, 2004, 2001), Villanova (2005), Rio Mesa (2004), Westlake (2003) and Carpinteria (2002).
Inappropriate: I was standing next to a respected high school athletic director on the sidelines of a county football game last week.
During the conversation, he stopped to take a cell phone call from one of the school's administrators.
One of the lower-level coaches was upset at one of the facilities and verbally abused the administrator.
"Could you arrange a meeting Monday with the coach?" she asked.
As soon as the last word was out of his mouth, the athletic director responded:
"I'd be glad to schedule a meeting with you, me and the ex-coach. If he called you that, we don't want him coaching at our school."
My respect for that athletic director grew tenfold.
Solicitation warning: Several groups have been soliciting ads from Camarillo merchants for a sports calendar on behalf of Camarillo High sports teams, said the school's athletic director Mike Smith.
In return for the ads, the groups promise to make donations to the school, Smith said.
"These are bogus claims," said Smith. "The one company we do work with is All-American Publishing.
"I ask that any merchant who is contacted regarding money for ads in a school sports calender call me before giving anyone any money."
Smith can be contacted at 389-6439.
Santa Clara reopening: Repairs to the roof and floor of Santa Clara's main gym have been completed, said athletic director Mike Shabert.
High winds tore singles off the facility's roof last winter. Rain seeped through an opening, causing damage to the floor and forcing school officials to move Santa Clara's first-round home game to Channel Islands.
"We had to replace 25 percent of the hardwood," said Shabert. Most of the damage was done to an area behind the visiting bench.
The whole floor was resurfaced. A new logo was designed for the floor.
"We're also redoing the lobby and adding a snack bar," said Shabert. The school will have a grand reopening/basketball tipoff on Dec. 8.
