Ranch Fire nearly contained
Firefighters Monday had nearly circled the Ranch fire, which had burned more than 58,000 acres between Castaic and Fillmore since it began Oct. 20.
The blaze was 97 percent contained Monday, and firefighters expected to finish cutting a fire break around the burned area today, said Joe Pasinato, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.
Increased humidity, lower temperatures and decreased winds were making the last bits of work easier for the 85 firefighters still in the burned area, Pasinato said.
The cause of the fire still had not been determined.
Portions of Angeles and Los Padres national forests remain closed this week. Air quality in Ventura County, which deteriorated as several large wildfires filled the air with smoke last week, had returned to normal by Monday, according to the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District.
