November Planting Tips From Agromin

Coastal communities and some of the less arid inland valleys in Southern California experience fall colors during the first few weeks in November. Enjoy the colors now because by the end of November, most leaves will have turned brown and fallen, say experts at Agromin, a Camarillo-based manufacturer of premium soil products.

Final planting opportunity of the year: Even with the rainy season almost upon us, it is not too late to plant flowers. Flowers that bloom during fall include pansies, violas, primroses, snapdragons, dianthus and sweet alyssum. Buy plants and bulbs already in bloom for quick color.

Chrysanthemums for Fall: Chrysanthemums are hearty plants that can immediately brighten a flower bed. Buy them in bloom. Once finished blooming, cut plants to a few inches above the ground. They will begin to grow again in spring and bloom in July.

Avoid over watering: plants and trees require less water in fall and winter as many become dormant. If the weather remains warm, however, watering is required. Let the weather be your guide.

Keep your lawn green in winter: Prepare your lawn so it remains green in winter. Mow lawns very short, sow in grass seed, scatter a light covering of soil amendment and then water thoroughly. Over-seed Bermuda lawns with annual rye to cover up brown spots.

Mulch Plants: Sprinkle about an inch of mulch in vegetable gardens and flower beds to stop rain-produced mud from splashing onto plants.
