Federer captures Swiss Indoors title

Roger Federer beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-4 Sunday to win his second straight Swiss Indoors at Basel, Switzerland, and clinch the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive year.

Federer joins Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl as the only men's players to end the season ranked No. 1 four or more times since the inception of the ATP rankings in 1973.

Murray tops Verdasco in St. Petersburg final: Second-seeded Andy Murray won his third career title, beating sixth-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open.

Hantuchova wins Generali Ladies title: Second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova defeated Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-2 to win the Generali Ladies at Linz, Austria, for her second WTA Tour title of the season and third overall.

Svindal wins giant slalom opener

Aksel Lund Svindal began defense of his World Cup overall and giant slalom titles with a victory at the season-opening race on the Rettenbach glacier in Soelden, Austria.

Olympic combined champion Ted Ligety led after the first leg of a World Cup race for the first time, but finished 0.32 seconds behind Svindal.

In his first race independent of the U.S. ski team, Bode Miller posted the second fastest final run to vault from 17th into fifth with a combined time of 2:18.93.

FIGURE SKATING

Meissner tops Ando at Skate America

Kimmie Meissner, the U.S. champion and 2006 world gold medalist, edged current world champ Miki Ando of Japan at Skate America at Reading, Pa., even though Ando won the free skate.

Ando, bothered by a right shoulder injury she indicated could need surgery, finished second to Meissner by 2.66 points.
