Steward leads the way in Oxnard's win
Today's game
- Villanova vs. Malibu at Nordhoff, 7 p.m.
Mark Beckham knew his Oxnard High football team might be looking ahead to next week's Pacific View League showdown at home against Camarillo.
Oxnard, the No. 3 team in The Star's poll, used a 21-point second quarter to pull away from host Channel Islands and earn a 49-13 victory at Ken Benefield Stadium on Friday night.
Dasmen Stewart ran for touchdowns of 33 and 13 yards to ignite Oxnard (6-2, 3-0) past winless Channel Islands. It was the Raiders' 12th straight defeat dating back to the 2006 season.
Marco Estrada provided the highlights in the Raiders homecoming as he returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown after Oxnard had taken a 14-0 lead with 11:50 left in the second quarter. Estrada added the PAT kick to trim the Yellowjackets lead to 14-7.
The Yellowjackets dominated the game from start to finish. Montague Fuentes scored on a 5-yard run to cap a five-play, 65-yard drive on the game's opening possession.
Fuentes had a key 40-yard run on the drive. Fuentes rushed for 86 yards on 11 carries.
The early offense was all Oxnard needed.
"We're getting better," said Beckham, whose team has won six straight since dropping its first two games to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
Channel Islands fell to 0-8 and 0-3 in the PVL.
Because of Channel Islands record, Beckham said that made it a hard game to motivate his players.
"They see the scores and know they're struggling," said Beckham. "We were looking ahead to next week."
After Estrada had his kickoff return, Oxnard's Sam Gonzalez had a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown to make it 21-7. Brandon Shows made all seven PAT kicks.
Stewart scored on a 13-yard run to boost Oxnard to a 28-7 advantage before halftime. Jamal Smith caught a 41-yard pass from Stewart to highlight the four-play, 63-yard drive. Stewart was 7-of-11 passing for 92 yards and rushed for 86 yards on eight carries.
Michael Duran, Michael Phelps, Rudy Perez, Juan Carrillo and Victor Singh anchored Oxnard's offensive line, which allowed the Yellowackets to rush for 270 yards.
Beckham said he's looking forward to a healthy Sam McCowan running the football.
"McCowan got hurt in the Ventura game and he played a little bit tonight," said Beckham.
Oxnard's Sean Blevins, Derek Shutt, Dustin Koehler and Sean Blevins were allowing Juan Jimenez little time to throw passes as Jimenez was sacked six times. Channel Islands had 51 yards of offense.
Alex Behunin intercepted a pass and the Yellowjackets recovered a fumble.
In the third quarter, Victor Balderrama returned a blocked punt 25 yards for a touchdown.
Shutt had a 10-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter and Ki Crawford scored on a 2-yard run for the final Oxnard touchdown.
Beckham said his team will be ready to play physical football against Camarillo.
"Our defense is playing well," said Beckham.
