Prep Football Roundup: Malibu scores first league win since 2000
Today's game
- Villanova vs. Malibu at Nordhoff, 7 p.m.
Malibu won only its second league game in history on Friday night, beating Fillmore 28-21 in Malibu.
It was Malibu's first Frontier League win since beating Santa Clara in 2000.
Sean Conrad led Malibu with three rushing touchdowns and 196 rushing yards, including long scoring runs of 72 and 65 yards. J.P. O'Fallon completed 9 of 11 passes for 83 yards and one touchdown pass for Malibu (4-4, 1-2).
Fillmore (4-4, 1-1) took an early lead with a 5-yard touchdown run by Matt Hayes, but Malibu scored 21 points by halftime and held on for the win. Fillmore's Nathan Ibarra scored on a 16-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to seven points, but the score never got any closer.
Fillmore was led with 125 yards rushing by Sal Ibarra. Nathan Ibarra ran for two touchdowns for Fillmore, rushing for 36 yards on seven carries. Nathan Ibarra also completed 9 of 16 passes for 45 yards and two interceptions.
Moorpark 36, Calabasas 0: Moorpark used stifling defense to defeat visiting Calabasas in a Marmonte League game.
Moorpark, which improved to 5-3, 3-2, held Calabasas to just 94 yards in offense and six first downs. The only time Calabasas advanced the ball inside the Moorpark 40-yard line was when the Coyotes blocked a punt and took possession at the Moorpark 25.
Oaks Christian 48, Grace Brethren 0: After an emotional 25-20 loss to Oak Park last week, Oaks Christian rebounded and returned to form of recent past with a blowout of Tri-Valley League rival Grace Brethren at Moorpark College.
Quarterback Chris Potter combined for four Oaks Christian touchdowns, sophomore tailback Malcolm Jones rushed for 143 yards and a score on just nine carries and the Lions had a 28-point second quarter en route to the team's highest scoring total since the season's opener.
With the win Oaks Christian (5-3) moved into a second-place tie in the Tri-Valley League at 2-1. Grace Brethren fell to 4-4, 1-2.
Westlake 17, Thousand Oaks 14: Jordan Mannisto kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired — after waiting through a total of five timeouts — to give host Westlake (5-3, 4-1) sole possession of second place in the Marmonte League.
After Westlake called time with three seconds left to get the kicking team on the field, Thousand Oaks (4-4, 3-2) used all three of its timeouts to try to ice the kicker. Westlake — which during the delay, had decided to switch to a fake, based on the Thousand Oaks defense — then called its final time out to go back to a kick after Thousand Oaks dropped two players into defensive coverage.
Westlake led 14-7 at halftime thanks to a 1-yard run by Cooper Shockey (17 carries, 157 yards) and a 3-yard pass from Nick Owens to Chris Biggs. Owens was 11 of 20 for 143 yards.
Newbury Park 32, Simi Valley 13: Chris Brown rushed for 194 yards and touchdowns of 17, 16 and 7 yards on 28 carries and the Panthers remained undefeated at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Marmonte League.
Newbury Park's defense racked up eight sacks for 52 yards in losses.
Simi Valley's Langston Jackson rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, but Simi Valley moves to 4-4 overall and in league.
