Panthers to start Testaverde at QB

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox on Friday named 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against Indianapolis. Testaverde got the nod ahead of David Carr, who is recovering from a back injury.

Estes, Armour share lead in Florida

Bob Estes and Tommy Armour III shot 5-under 68 to share the lead in the suspended second round of the rain-soaked Ginn sur Mer Classic at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Romero grabs lead: Eduardo Romero took the second-round lead in the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma, shooting a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke advantage over Denis Watson and Jim Thorpe.

Pettersen keeps two-shot edge: Suzann Pettersen holed a 115-yard wedge shot for eagle on the par-4 13th and birdied the 18th to maintain a two-stroke lead in the Honda LPGA Thailand at Pattaya.

Two tied for Mallorca lead: Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen and France's Jean-Francois shot 5-under 65s to share the lead in the Mallorca Classic at Son Servera.

Griffin had alcohol during fatal crash

Former NBA player Eddie Griffin had more than three times the legal alcohol limit in his system when he crashed his sport utility vehicle into a moving train and died this summer, according to an autopsy report.

Fever declines option on coach: Brian Winters is out as head coach of the Indiana Fever after leading the team to Eastern Conference finals for the second time in three years. The Fever declined its option on Winters' contract.

Federer advances to Swiss semifinals

Roger Federer cruised into the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors at Basel, Switzerland, his home tournament, by beating Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-2.

Murray reaches semifinals: Second-seeded Andy Murray rallied past Dmitry Tursunov 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 and advanced to the semifinals at the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open.

Davydenko fined for lack of effort: Nikolay Davydenko, already at the center of a betting investigation, was fined $2,000 for lack of effort in a second-round loss at the St. Petersburg Open.
