Newbury Park (8-0) shows its tough side to beat Simi Valley
Today's game
- Villanova vs. Malibu at Nordhoff, 7 p.m.
Once renowned for its flash, the unbeaten Newbury Park High football team now wins with grit.
Chris Brown rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns, the Panthers defense chalked up eight sacks and Newbury Park staved off determined Simi Valley to register a 32-13 victory in their Marmonte League matchup Friday night at Newbury Park High.
Still perfect after eight weeks at 8-0, including 5-0 in the Marmonte League, first-place Newbury Park prevailed in a physical slugfest that also featured 186 rushing yards and two second-half touchdowns for Simi Valley's Langston Jackson.
"We just really want to win games, any way we can," said Brown, a 6-foot-1, 189-pound junior. "This team hasn't done all that well in the past seven years. We want to change that this season."
Newbury Park coach George Hurley said it was a matter of "taking care of business."
"That's what it was," he said. "It wasn't pretty. We made some mistakes when we had a chance to put the game away. We need to improve our discipline as we get ready to play some big boys in the weeks ahead."
After staying up the night before until 5 a.m. to study for exams, Brown was anything but a sleepwalker come game time.
He tallied 91 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown run, as Newbury Park built a 19-0 lead at halftime. He finished with 194 yards and two more scoring runs of 17 and 16 yards on 28 carries

Jackson totaled 123 rushing yards in the second half, including a 2-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.
"Never give up," he said after his team moved to in league and 4-4 overall. "We kept playing hard, no matter what."
Jackson's second touchdown enabled Simi Valley to pull withing 13 points, at 26-13, with 6:34 left in the game.
But after recovering an onside kick, Newbury Park closed out the victory with six consecutive carries by Brown, including a 16-yard touchdown run with 3:44 remaining.
