Moorpark defense too much for Calabasas in 36-0 win
Today's game
- Villanova vs. Malibu at Nordhoff, 7 p.m.
Moorpark High used stifling defense to defeat visiting Calabasas 36-0 in a Marmonte league game at Moorpark High on Friday night.
Moorpark, which improved to 5-3, 3-2, held Calabasas to just 94 yards in offense and six first downs. The only time Calabasas advanced the ball inside the Moorpark 40-yard line was when the Coyotes blocked a punt and took possession at the Moorpark 25.
The ensuing drive, which began midway through the third quarter, ended in disaster for Calabasas (1-7, 0-5) when a 35-yard field-goal attempt was blocked. Moorpark's Greg Morrissey picked up the loose ball and sprinted 87 yards for a touchdown, giving the Musketeers a 22-0 lead.
"When the ball fell to me, I thought I had the speed to make it," said a jubilant Morrissey after the game. "I got tired at the end, but made it in."
Moorpark's defense scored two other times. The first came when a Calabasas punt attempt early in the second quarter resulted in a snap over punter Kyle Canamar's head, forcing him to kick the ball through the end zone for a Moorpark safety.
The second came when Corey Sandoval recovered a Calabasas fumble in the end zone late in the third quarter, providing Moorpark with its final points and a 36-0 lead.
Moorpark's offense was led by Austin Edmonson, who gained 157 rushing yards on 28 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Moorpark quarterback Adam Barry was held to his lowest passing output of the season, 110 yards. Barry did throw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Murry for the game's first score and a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Barker with 37 seconds left in the first half.
Murry caught seven passes for 94 yards.
Cameron Ventura was the main offensive weapon for Calabasas, carrying the ball 18 times, but gained just 27 yards rushing. He also caught three passes for 19 yards.
Calabasas had 13 offensive plays go for negative yardage.
Moorpark was at times its own worst enemy as the Musketeers were penalized 12 times for 130 yards.
