Camarillo High tight end Aulama Lemalu is brought down by Pacifica defensive back Matt Madrid during Friday's Pacific View League game. Camarillo won the game 38-13.
One important win away from the program's third Pacific View League football title in the last five years, Camarillo High principal Glenn Lipman made a solemn oath.
Should Camarillo clinch the championship with a victory over co-leader Oxnard on the road next Friday, Lipman will have his head shaved in front of the student body.
"It's not that he has that much hair to lose anyway," said Camarillo coach Dennis Riedmiller.
Camarillo (6-2, 3-0) put itself in position to play in essentially a league championship game for the fourth straight year with a 38-13 road win over Pacifica (4-4, 2-1) on Friday night in a matchup of league co-leaders.
Marcus Sanchez completed 16 of 29 passes for 242 yards and scored on a 23-yard run for Camarillo, which won its fourth consecutive game. Gary Glenn, returning to the lineup after missing one game to an injury, rushed for 136 yards and scored on runs of 17 and 33 yards.
Pacifica, which had won its first two league games in program history, forced three turnovers and held Camarillo to three points on five possessions in the red zone.
"Ever since winning in the last minute against Oak Park, our team has really come together," said Camarillo defensive back C.J. Smith, who had one of the three interceptions by the Scorpions defense.
It was not a good start for Camarillo.
Starting right tackle Armando Valenzuela broke his foot on Camarillo's first offensive play. The Scorpions turned the ball over twice inside the Pacifica 30 in the first quarter as the two teams battled to a draw.
"We've been very good in the red zone," said Riedmiller. "We made some mistakes. We'll correct those."
Pacifica scored the game's first points. The Tritons drove 82 yards on nine plays. Vince Moraga's completions of 36 yards to Andrew Rivera and 16 to A.J. Guzman set up a 4-yard TD pass to Jaime Razo.
"Pacifica hasn't been in this position before, so we knew that they would come out strong," said Riedmiller. "We knew we had to weather that early storm."
The Camarillo defense stuffed Pacifica's running game, holding the Tritons to 34 yards on 18 carries in the first half.
After missing on six of his first seven attempts, Sanchez completed 10 of his next 11 for 187 yards as Camarillo scored on four consecutive possessions for a 29-7 lead midway into the third quarter.
It was Sanchez' 23-yard TD run on a third-and-one quarterback draw that started the Camarillo landslide.
"Camarillo is too good of a team," said Pacifica coach Donnie Rea.
"All along our defense has come to play. We did as well as we could. As far as toughness and play execution, I thought we played well."
Pacifica needs one win in the next two weeks to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in the program's six-year history.
