In between goals by Redlands, the scoreless streak lasted 652 minutes.

Ross Schunk, set up by an Eli Bowman cross, scored 35 minutes into Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown as goalkeeper Chris Thompson and the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team allowed their first goal of the month.

For the second time in three weeks, the Kingsmen (13-4, 10-2) lost 1-0 to the six-time defending champions and will probably have to settle for second place in the SCIAC, although they can still earn the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berth by winning next week's SCIAC tournament.

Thompson, a senior from Oaks Christian School who is seventh in the country in shutouts, backstops a defense also led by fleet-footed sweeper Alex Tragos.

"Chris is so quick off his line," said coach Dan Kuntz, "and Alex has a lot of speed. If you're even with him, he's going to win the race."

Most of the goals the Kingsmen have allowed have been on set pieces like corners, free kicks and penalties.

"Anything in open play, we have a good shot of defending," said Kuntz.

Center backs Michael Hanks and Graydon Pearson, both Royal High products, and tall, rangy wingbacks Blake Bernhard and Scott Jones fill out the back line.

That group is complemented by a huge midfield that includes 6-foot-2 Westlake product Matt Fernandez, 6-1 Norwegian Steffen Isetorp and 6-4 Ryan Dosh.

"You put those guys together and they're not easy to get by," said Kuntz.

Tightening up: A four-game loss to third-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday has the CLU women's volleyball team in a battle to hang on the second place in the SCIAC.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled within a game of the Regals, despite 15 kills by both outside hitter Summer Plante-Newman and middle blocker Allison Kerr.

CLU bounced back with a three-game win over Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday. Three matches remain in the season, including a season-ending visit by defending SCIAC champion La Verne.

Smith honored: CLU women's soccer freshman Aubrie Smith was named SCIAC athlete of the week for Oct. 16-22.

Smith scored game-winning goals in victories over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 2-1, and Redlands, 3-0.

Smith has seven goals this season. The wins pushed CLU into third place in the SCIAC at 5-3-2 in conference play.

Soccer reschedules: Men's and women's soccer matches originally set for Tuesday, then rescheduled for Wednesday in light of wildfires throughout Southern California, will now be played on Monday.

The men's team will host Occidental at 4 p.m. The women's team will play at Occidental beginning at 4 p.m.

All conference soccer matches scheduled for Saturday will remain as planned.
