Criminal defense attorney arrested on drug, theft charges

A criminal defense attorney was arrested Thursday after he arrived at the Ventura County Courthouse allegedly showing symptoms of drug use, police said.

Mark Stein, 39, of Ventura was several hours late for a court hearing in which he was the assigned defense attorney. When he finally arrived, Ventura detectives who were waiting to testify in the case observed the alleged symptoms, according to police.

Detectives later served a search warrant at Stein's residence and law office on East Thompson Boulevard. During the searches, detectives found a stolen vehicle in Stein's garage, other items of stolen property and drug paraphernalia, police said.

He was charged on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, auto theft, possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the County Jail and released on bail.

Now if they would only search all the lawyers houses they would find lots of illegal things. Just like most politicians.

So what about the defendent? Just because the Public defender got arrested and now needs another Public defender do we not get to hear what happened to the original defendant in need of a Public defender? I'm sorry but it is Friday a guy needs a laugh now and then.....

According to the California Bar Association web-page, it indicates that he is a private attorney from the aw Office of Mark Stein. Graduated Law School in San Francisco (may explain alot) and has no prior bar related discipline or actions. Pretty funny...

First the article DOES NOT say he works for the Public Defenders office, infact it says he has an office on East Thompson Boulevard, which has got to be a private office because that is not where the Public Defenders office is. As far as the fact that "he was the assigned defense attorney" could mean that he had taken the case pro bono. Again, he is not a PD, he is a private practice attorney, and I would guess not a very good one!

Man that report brings back memories of the bad old days. I knew so many lawyers who did drugs and many went to court high. I always wandered when one would be caught on the job.

KANGAROO COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS BECOMING QUITE THE NORM THESE DAYS , I THINK MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD START LOOKING INTO HOW CORRUPT THE VENTURA POLICE DEPT IS AND HOW MUCH THEY ARE TRYING TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND THE LEGAL VENUES FOR MAKING A BUST THESE DAYS , THEY SEEM TO BE THE LEGAL GESTAPO IN THIS CITY AND FROM AN OUTSIDERS VIEW LOOKING IN IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THEY ARE PROBABLY LOOKING AND GRASPING FOR STRAWS IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED CASE , PROBABLY BECAUSE OF SOME OVER ZEALOUS COP WHO SCREWED UP AND MADE AN ARREST THAT THE DA'S OFFICE ISNT PREPARED TO BE DEFEATED ON , IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE VPD IS PROBABLY AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THEY HAD NO OTHER WAY TO SHOW FACE ON THURSDAY WHEN THEY KNOW THEY SCREWED UP BECAUSE THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY THERE IN FORCE TO TESTIFY BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO CONVINCE SOMEONE OF SOMETHING THAT ISNT THE FULL TRUTH. WHY ELSE WOULD IT TAKE FOUR TESTIMONIES , THE CASE HASNT EVEN MADE THE PRELIMINARY STAGES YET , AND ALREADY THEY'RE TRYING TO INTIMIDATE THE DEFENDANTS SIDE OF THE CASE, THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO TAKE THE FOCUS OFF OF THEIR MISTAKES AND TRYING TO RUIN A MANS CAREER THAT IS OBVIOUSLY GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE THEM SWEAT THE FACT THAT THEY'RE PROBABLY GONNA LOSE THIS ONE, I HEAR THE DEFENDANT WAS THERE ALONE ALL MORNING WHILE WAITING FOR COUNSEL AND THATS SHOWING ALOT FOR THEIR INTIMIDATION FACTOR, HE WAS THERE ALONE WHILE 4 OFFICERS WHO OBVIOUSLY HAVE SOME TYPE OF GRUDGE AGAINST HIM,THAT SHOWS HOW MUCH HES GOT TO BE AFRAID OF. I THINK THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS DEPT SHOULD START LOOKING INTO THE WALLS OF THE VPD AND SEE HOW MANY SEARCHES THEY FIND THEMSELVES CONDUCTING , AND SEE HOW MANY BAD COPS ARE REALLY RUNNING THE STREETS AND TRYING TO BENEFIT FROM THE STREET INTIMIDATION THEY PUT INTO THE FEEBLE HEARTED AND MINDED OF THIS CITY. BET NOT ONE OF THEM WOULD HAVE SAT ALONE WHILE 4 PEOPLE FROM THE DEFENDANTS SIDE SAT LOOKING AND TALKING ABOUT THEM OPENLY OUTLOUD. VENTURA NEEDS TO PUT BETTER REAL HONORABLE POLICE OFFICERS BACK ON THE STREET , AND THEN THESE TYPE OF COMMENTS WOULDNT BE POSTED . WAKE UP VENTURA THE VPD IS NOT ONLY TRYING TO DO AS THEY PLEASE BUT THEY ARE ALSO VIOLATING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS WHO PAY THE TAXES THAT PAY THEIR SALARIES. ITS AN ELECTION YEAR REMEMBER AND ITS GONNA COUNT FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS , SO VOTE WITH THIS IN MIND , DO YOU REALLY WANT TO LET THEM GET AWAY WITH VIOLATING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS JUST SO SOME POLITICIAN CAN FATTEN UP HIS PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT? LETS HOPE INTERNAL AFFAIRS READS THIS AND STARTS LOOKING INTO MAKING THE VPD A MORE RESPECTABLE ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN ,BECAUSE AS OF TODAY ITS A BIT OF A STOMACH TURNER............

hmmm, why would four police officers be waiting in court to testify, when they could either be out on patrol (if this was during their shift) or off doing something enjoyable (if it was their day off)? maybe it's because the norm is to subpoena everyone involved with the case, even if the testimony of more than one is redundant.

i hate to say this, but "defendant" needs to get off the drugs. i know a good many of the officers from vpd and i have nothing but respect for them. vpd is clean, honest and professional police department.

Defendant, were you on the floor kicking and screaming like a little child when you wrote that? Stop whining, get off the drugs and then maybe you won't need to go to court and have four cops babysit you while your lawyer is off doing drugs.

you're probably a member of the vpd so hold true to your code of silence, im sure alot of people said that Rampart was a resptable ,clean, and professional police dept as well ,i ont need to be on drugs to notice more than im told to see, i have my own set of eyes, and ears and i can tell the difference between a hot dog and a hamburger and when its obviously not what i ordered u can bet im gonna send it back with a complaint, the problem with this city is that too many people are afraid to stand up and use their rights, well i have rights for a reason , and ill use them as i see fit, the rest of the people who see and hear all the dramatic bs that goes on in this city have to live with their silence and until the day it lands in their family or on their front door they can choose to stay quiet , but know this, if and when it does fall upon your life and its seems so wrongly intrusive and unfair just know that you have always had CHOICE , choice to see the right in the world as well as the wrong , and choice to either sit back and accept it or the choice to say something and see something take place to fix the problem, its solely your CHOICE and you shouldnt allow others to decide your CHOICE for you , thats when its no longer a FREE COUNTRY and you no longer choose to have CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, FREEDOM is becoming a MYTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and as far as the drugs accusations go, im not one who needs drugs or alcohol to speak my mind, im probably cleaner than everyone at your house, have yourselves a nice day , and hope you all have a safe and enjoyable halloween............defendant.

p.s.im not saying that every officer from the vpd is a scandalous ,corrupt , and crooked cop, not in the slightest, and i tip my hat to the officers of the vpd who righteously ,and whole heartedly hold their job as a well respected profession, cause ill be the first to admit being a police officer is a very respectable position ,so long as they're REAL with themselves and their community, and im not ashamed or embarrassed to admit that , openly, and everyone knows who i am so im not hiding at all. thank you and have a good day

to the defendant, try to always remember 'THEIR ARE NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE WHO REFUSE TO SEE', my mom used to say that when i was a kid, and it seems to be an apropriate statement to the 'good' people of ventura county, lets hope that it eats at them until they look into it, you never know!! :-)

it seems that 'rumor has it' they have already tried and convicted the defendant, the cops that is!! they want him for some reason, must of pissed somebody off!! so to you 'good' venturan's if for some reason our 'defendant' should 'disapear' or should some missfortune fall upon him, then we all will know, we should of said something sooner, ya think? lets hope my contacts are wrong, dear god lets hope they are wrong!!
