Comic books teach fishermen about conservation

The first comic book for fishermen is now available from the Conejo-Valley based nonprofit Iemanya Oceanica, a global marine conservation group.

Laleh Mohajerani, the organization's founder and president, said Iemanya has published and is ready to distribute the first ever shark conservation comic book. "The first in a series of comics to address the issues of shark conservation will go out to Mexican shark and ray fishermen throughout the country," she said Friday.

Why a comic book? "Given the education levels and reading habits of fishermen, comics have proven to be the most effective way to get a conservation message across. Comics can also then be passed from person to person," she said, adding that 10,000 copies go into circulation in the first week of November.

The books will be distributed through collaborative efforts of a network of conservation organizations, including San Diego based Wildcoast, Greenpeace Mexico, and Defenders of Wildlife. "It is vital for nonprofits, governments, researchers and local communities to all work together to prevent extinction of sharks. The survival of sharks is crucial for the health of our oceans. Sharks keep our oceans healthy and in balance," said Mohajerani. "Without these important predators we face the catastrophic collapse of the marine eco-system."
