Old Camarillo fire station can become restaurant

The Camarillo City Council voted 5-0 Wednesday night to adopt an ordinance that will allow an unused fire station in Old Town Camarillo to be used a restaurant.

Camarillo officials have wanted to see the fire station, owned by the city’s Community Development Commission, converted into a restaurant as part of a continuing effort to revitalize Old Town.

But the zoning that the station is in — rural exclusive — did not allow that type of use.

Now with the approved ordinance, publicly owned buildings in the rural-exclusive zone can have restaurant use, as long as it has a conditional-use permit.

The fire station is adjacent to Dizdar Park.

Just what we need-more traffic and no place to park!

Sigh. Yes, but the "solution" to the parking problem that the city originally proposed was to take St. Mary's only grass playground for the school, to pave it over. Hopefully they will leave that plan dead and buried, as it deserves. Maybe they need to look at the Los Primeros site - now unused. Downtown redevelopment like Santa Barbara's can only succeed if - like our neighbors to the north - we have some nearby parking structures to support it.

I hope someone does something really nice with that fire station - like a "fire station" themed restaurant. Right now it's an eye-sore, but it could be restored nicely.
