No Endorsement Here Boss....

This gentleman sent me this e-mail after reading remarks that one of the Council Candidates made.

Someone who has been attending the Ventura Council candidate forums remarked recently about how so many candidates were so ignorant of the issues and basic function of city government. In today's Star, candidate Jerry Martin who was an electrician and is a labor union aficionado, repeatedly demonstrates that ignorance. The article quotes him as saying:

If elected, he would work to create a special ad hoc committee of the council to review all development applications. That way, the council would be aware of projects as they enter the planning pipeline, not as they reach the end. "Too much slips by the council now," he said.

Clearly, Martin has no concept of appropriate city management as he proposes that the City Council immerse themselves in a role that is properly delegated to the City Planning Commission. Proper review of development has the Planning Commission accomplishing that review with only the City Council's involvement as a last resort appeal and only after beinginitiated by the developer. As it is, Ventura City Council spends far too many Monday nights hassling over somebody'splanning issue. Most cities rarely, if ever, review individual applications and proposals.

That is where people like Martin show their limited background and ignorance. He shows that he has no ability to sit on a deliberative body such as a City Council and the fact that he is backed by the fire and police tells me they were really desperate for a labor union man to have chosen someone so obviously ignorant of the proper role of the city council and the functions of government.
