Hawks visited by CHP helicopter
Students at Tierra Linda Elementary School in Camarillo were in for a special treat on October 25, 2007. California Highway Patrol officers visited students as part of the school's annual Red Ribbon Week, a week-long event educating students to say no to drugs.
As a special bonus, one of the CHP helicopters made an appearance and landed in the middle of the school's field as students from all grades watched from a distance. As the helicopter came in for a landing, students spelled out H-A-W-K-S to welcome the officers on board. Soon, a voice came through the helicopter's loudspeaker proclaiming 'We are here to protect and serve you' much to the delight and cheers of the students gathered. Players from Camarillo High School's varsity football team were also on hand to provide support to the students and to give them the message that you can't be doing drugs if you want to be on a team and be like them.
As the students filed by, grade-by-grade, past the helicopter to take a first-hand look at the interior, they were greeted by the CHP mascot and several officers and gave high fives to the Scorpion football players. Students were also encouraged to dress in their favorite sports uniforms and several teachers even got in the theme by donning football jerseys and other sports uniforms.
During the students lunch, they were treated to seeing the helicopter take off from their field. First the lights on the wing and tail went on and slowly the rotor turned on and slowly began to spin faster and faster. With one last wave to students and bystanders who were watching from the school playground and/or neighboring homes, the helicopter took off, circled around the field once and then flew off into the sky on its way to its next destination.
Though the excitement of the helicopter landing and taking off from their field was soon over, the Camarillo football players and their coaches stayed during the students lunch and interacted with the first through fifth graders while they played in the field and giving each student they came into contact with their undivided attention.
