BHS Drama Stages "To Kill a Mockingbird"
The Buena High School Drama Department is presenting its fall production of "To Kill A Mockingbird." The play is an adaptation for the stage, by Christopher Sergal, of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
The play is set in the fictional small, racially segregated town of Maycomb, Alabama. It's 1935 and the Great Depression is taking its toll on the townsfolk, including widowed lawyer Atticus Finch (Daniel Olivier) and his children Jem (Ben Tardif) and Jean Louise, better known as Scout (Grace Ellberg). Atticus is called upon to defend a black farmhand Tom Robinson (Cameron Morris) accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell (Jessica Zaksek).
Jem and Scout have to suffer the taunts of their bigoted neighbours and Bob Ewell (Jonathan Maresca) but find an unexpected ally in the prissy and eccentric Dill (David Mietzner), who shares their fascination with mysterious recluse Boo Radley (Jarred Kiel). Courtroom drama, coming of age story and slice of American Gothic - it's a winning combination. Harper Lee's message of tolerance is as relevant today as the day she wrote the story and is effectively brought to life by these student actors.
The play runs November 8th, 10th, 11th and 15th -17th in Buena's McConnell Auditorium. All shows begin at 7PM except the Nov. 11th matinee showing at 3PM. Tickets are sold at the door and the box office opens 30 minutes before curtain. Student tickets are $5 and adults are $7. For more information, call 289-1826 x1260.
