Working To Work

"Oh God, I Need This Job," implored a character in the Broadway musical "A Chorus Line." And so goes the consciousness of a " J O B " as opposed to work. And that doesn't neccessarily mean hard labor. A friend of ours kids a J O B stands for Just Over Broke. If that's the case what does W O R K stand for? Worthwhile Optimistic Reality (Check) K ??

The work scene has changed so drastically over the years, you could find yourself being driven by a cab driver who's actually a Neuro Surgeon or Attorney. And not always is it because their qualifications don't translate to this country. A Russian woman we know is unable to practice her chosen profession here, so works in retail and was once processing insurance claims from medical claims. The bitter irony of work in the year 2007.

Haven't we, the underemployed, rather than unemployed, or over worked and underpaid (when we actually are gainfully employed) tried everything to keep our heads above water? And when you keep playing phone tag with a manager or potential employer, or e mail yoyo, don't you just want to take anything from anyone who will just give you a break? Then the harsh reality of compensation rears its proverbial ugly head. But at least you belong to the work force. At least you can say you are actually employed.

What lengths you go to. Yours truly actually filled out an application for a retail business in Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks--take your pick--after reaching semi-meltdown. On the Position Description (read Key Store Functions) one said "Performs parking lot and store maintenance and upkeep (including SNOW removal)." Heck, if there was snow to remove, why would one not do that work?

Hang in there fellow seekers. There is hope. You just have to keep working at it.
