Cisneros repeats as WSC cross country champion
Air conditions caused by local brushfires forced the Western State Conference to shift Tuesday's conference cross country championships from Moorpark to San Luis Obispo.
Which was all right with Oxnard College's Miguel Cisneros.
At Fairbanks Park, the course in which he won the title a year ago, Cisneros became the first Condors harrier to win back-to-back WSC titles.
"I guess it helped because we weren't so familiar with the Moorpark course," said Cisneros from the Central Coast. "It's nice and sunny. Better than it is in Oxnard right now."
The sophomore from Santa Clara High finished the hilly, all-dirt course in 21 minutes, 16 seconds.
"I ran a little bit more conservative," said Cisneros. "Last time up here, I was trying to get out there and push the whole race.
"We kind of ran together and I made a move, surging up the last big hill. That's where the race broke open."
His time was 19 seconds better than a year ago and 20 seconds better than Alfredo Coronado of Canyons, who had beaten Cisneros twice this fall, including once on the same course.
"You heard about that?" said Cisneros, laughing. "We race each other all the time so we're pretty familiar with each other's running styles."
College of the Canyons won the men's team title with 44 points, followed by Glendale (57), Ventura (119) and Oxnard (122).
Ventura nipped Oxnard as Brandon Johnson finished seventh (22:49) and Sal Plaza finished 14th (23:15).
Moorpark, led by Sterling Granger (19th, 23:44), finished 10th with 247 points.
Behind Cisneros, Oxnard won the team title last year for the first time in its 31-year history.
"It's not the same excitement that we had last year," said Cisneros, "but I'm still happy that we qualified for SoCals. Hopefully, we can make state."
Minnie Kellner was 15th (21:47), Laura Mason was 22nd (22:25) and Sarah Presley was 28th (22:45) as the Ventura College women's team finished second to Glendale, 22-125.
Glendale's Tove Berg won the women's title in 18:40 and her teammates finished second, fifth, sixth and eighth behind her.
Brianna Smith finished fourth (19:48) and Rebecca Aldarran finished seventh (20:53) as Moorpark finished ninth with 190 points. Oxnard, led by Sara Lopez (39th, 23:29), finished 12th with 295 points.
