Update: MAGIC INCIDENT (LA County near Magic Mountain)- 5:20 pm, October 23. God bless the firefighters,

On my scanner they are moving hand crews and a strike team up to Squaw Flat Ranger Station and then deploy up into the oil fields.

Winds are much calmer this morning but still are blowing.

It is on the East side of Sespe Creek behind Fillmore. We are on Sycamore and have had no contact with either the Sheriff's or County Fire. So for now Cliff, Grand and Sycamore seem to be OK.

Just above these comments you'll find the latest updates from the Ventura County Fire Department. This includes info on evacuation areas for both the Ranch (Fillmore, Piru) and Magic (Simi Valley) fires.

The Ventura County Star needs to update their map. Those of you that have Google Earth the US forestry service is keeping it pretty updated. This web page has links to various Google Earth maps that have been created.

I just read there's a fire in Tapo Canyon in Simi. Firemen are on route. Any news on that?

Posted by bmclean , Moderator, on October 23, 2007 at 10:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

misseshen, we just updated our map with info from this morning. Check at the top of the story.

Posted by misseshen on October 23, 2007 at 10:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

According to the map the fire is 3 miles north-northeast of Pole Canyon (end of 4th Street) at the closest. The fire that is headed towards the Sespe is close to the Sespe but over 3 miles away from town. There are a few structures scattered in that area but I can't tell what kind. It looks like there is approx 3-4 miles between Fillmore and the fire so it all just depends on terrain and wind.

Posted by misseshen on October 23, 2007 at 10:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The problem with the Star's map is that it has the "Ranch" label over Fillmore.

Posted by misseshen on October 23, 2007 at 10:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ha! As soon as I say that I notice it's been changed...again. Thank you.

Posted by Fillmorite on October 23, 2007 at 10:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

bmclean-

I know that was the latest from the Forest Service or VCFD. But that was where the fire was yesterday. The fire right now is at the east side of westerly area of the boundry of the Condor Sanctuary. There is a leg that on the map of the Condor Sanct. that comes toward Fillmore. The fire is on the east side of that. I can see it from my house. Oh by the way we just had gusts up to 50 mph here. Sustained winds are at 20 or so. So the fire is likely to start moving again.

Posted by Fillmorite on October 23, 2007 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Just heard on the scanner that there are spot fires at Doe Flat. If you have a Forest Service map you can see where that is.

Moderator maybe you could post a link or Forest Service Map of the Squaw Flat, Doe Flat, Green Cabins area.

Bruce & other moderators...thanks for all that you're doing to keep everyone in the loop, with the latest and greatest information.

God bless the firefighters & all other emergency personnel that are working so tirelessly throughout all of these horrible fires.

And my heart goes out to all of the people who lost their homes and to those who are currently displaced. Over 321,000 people current are out of their homes. Everyone who can help should by making donations of $$, clothing, bedding, food, water, etc. San Diego County has just been devastated. Those poor people...

Fillmoreite
The maps are updated whenever the Incident Commander can get a spare helicopter to go up and, using GPS, physically map out the fire's perimeter. Air assets are in short supply, as everything that can fly is dumping retardant or water on something somewhere. Be nice if they had a spotter plane just for command use.

KHAY is at the mall taking donations for the firefighters!! we just went and dropped off $100 wirth of stuff for them! the response has been incredible!! its awesome, the only thing that bothers me is that it takes something bad for all of us to band together! we should do this all the time- for our troops, and for all of the brave men and women of our police and fire depts!! God bless them again today- this time with some terrible heat!!

Posted by nascargirl1599 on October 23, 2007 at 11:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Does anyone know how long khay will be there?

Posted by Fillmorite on October 23, 2007 at 11:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ebrockway,

I understand that. If the Star would put up a map of the Sespe wilderness area it would help. Also a City map of Fillmore. As we hear scanner calls we can reference the map and keep everyone that does not have a scanner informed. This would also help the people who live in Fillmore but work out of town a resource to know what is going on. Family and friends would be helped out also. No need to jam phone lines.

As I am typing they are deploying engines for structure protection in those areas already advised to evacuate. Foothill, 4th, Teatsort, etc. Also looks like down on Fillmore end of Goodenough.

Khay will be at the Pacific View Mall by the new Halloween store until 3 p.m. today or as long as people continue to come by. They've filled up one 40 foot truck already and are bringing more in as demand warrants. Local businesses nearby like the Ventura Target (who is donating a pallet of items) are donating as well.

Posted by digilight2eyez on October 23, 2007 at 11:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

sbkc the closest I could find was from the inciweb site and it said:

"Magic and Ranch fire are now on oposite sides of Hwy 126 at the LA-Ventura County line and are about 2 miles apart"

I've heard reports that the Magic fire is 100% contained but I don't believe that one yet.

the website I found that out was http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1002/

and you can also find a current map of the Ranch fire at http://www.inciweb.org/incident/maps/...

I found it alittle hard to tell myself, but it may be of interest.

I know that the inciweb site can get massive trafic with all the fires. I have downloaded and mirrored the map to here as well.

I asked him if he'd heard anything about the Magic Fire and he said that the fire at Stevensons Ranch is out. I was relieved to hear this, but at the same time I'm hearing contridictory statements from others and the media. I don't know if this helps anyone, but just thought I'd update.

The last report I heard was that the Magic fire was 40% contained, but that it was expected to merge with the two other fires. Therefore how can it ever be fully contained if it's just going to merge and become a big inferno. Confusing?

Silverstrandbeach...
I took water, propel water, chapstick, beef jerky, baby wipes(for quick cleaning), lotion, some hard candy and mints to suck on, a big tub of pretzels, granola bars, some individual tuna and crackers lunches... just stuff like that. My husband is military so I just got stuff that he uses in training and in Iraq. Most people are bringing water so I tried to get some other stuff too. My kids also drew some thank you pictures and they said they were going to personally hand them to the firefighters. I hope this helps with some ideas.

I know a few, Medical is basically a Paramedic call, with No Code, Medium, or High after it usually, Vegetation or Fire, is, well, Fire, and TC is Traffic Collision. Yesterday I saw Barranca on there, which, to me, would be the same as a Vegetation Fire.

from the article:

MAGIC INCIDENT (LA County near Magic Mountain) -11:45 am, October 23. The fire that started near Magic Mountain in Los Angeles County and is nearing the Ventura County line.

It is now approximately three miles away. Intense backfiring operations overnight appear to be working to slow the advance of the fire. 428 personnel are currently assigned to the incident.

Approximately 950 structures are threatened.

THE VENTURA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT (805-654-3593) IS ISSUING A PRECAUTIONARY EVACUATION ORDER FOR THE UNICORPORATED AREAS OF NORTHEAST SIMI VALLEY IN THE BENNETT RD. AND DITCH RD. AREAS.

(Residents of western Los Angeles County should call the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department (661-255-1121)for evacuation information in their areas.) The fire is moving to the southwest and has grown to more than 1,500 acres. It is 40% contained. Smoke from this fire is blowing into the Simi Valley and Westlake Village areas and the amount of smoke is likely to increase as the fire moves into the county. The Ventura County Fire Department has joined a unified command with the LA County Fire Department to jointly fight this fire and more than 100 fire engines have been assigned to attack it or provide structure protection.

I drove up Tapo Canyon at lunch and didn't see any fire equipment and there didn't seem to be a need either as there was almost no smoke. According to the VCFD website there are only 93 personnel currently "assigned to the incident to improve the fire-lines and mop-up hot spots". There used to be 428. So, I don't think you need to worry much at this time.

I see lots of you asking about the Lang Ranch incident that was on Fireline web site. Fireline is a list of incidents that have been reported. Anyone can report an incident and naturally the fire department would respond. And due to conditions, they'll respond with heavy resources. So Fireline could show they're responding to Lang Ranch with 21 units and they'll arrive and find a smoldering cigarette. Then it would come down off Fireline. This is why we wait to confirm there's an actual fire rather than reporting on every Fireline incident that is listed. Hope this helps.

According to the fireline when the 21 units responded to Lang Ranch that smoke was visible and that it was confined in the barranca there off of Westlake Blvd. and they had called for a helo. Luckily they were able to extinguish it quickly.

Here is most recent update:

KVTA Wildfire Updates

Updated 3:30 PM Tuesday...

Highway 126 closed eastbound in Piru, open westbound from Santa Clarita into Ventura County.

"RANCH FIRE"

The Ranch Fire has burned to within 3 miles of Fillmore. It is still an active fire with flare ups from time to time. Ventura County Fire Captain Barry Parker tells KVTA NEWS as of 3 PM today (Tuesday) that the positive news is that the wind is not nearly as bad today. But it is still hot and dry and the fuel moisture level is dangerously low. He also says that the Ranch Fire is currently burning in relatively inaccessible terrain. He says they are short on resources, just some hand crews, engine companies and a handful of water dropping helicopters. The people who live along Goodenough Road in Fillmore, and Grand Avenue just west of the city, and all of Piru are still under recommended evacuation notices. The "Ranch Fire" has burned 54,518 acres It is just 10% contained with full containment expected on Halloween.

The smoke and ash over Ventura County is coming not only from the Ranch Fire, but from the other fires in the Saugus, Newhall and Santa Clarita area, especially the Buckweed Fire which is east of I-5 in Saugus.

"MAGIC FIRE"

Significant progress was made on the 1500 acre "Magic Fire" which broke out near Magic Mountain Monday afternoon. It is now 40% contained and fire officials believe they have halted it progress. Concern that it would march over the hill into Simi Valley were lessened greatly by the diminishing wind and continued assault from the air. At last report, the fire was stalled in Los Angeles County, but the Ventura County Sheriff still has precautionary evacuation for the unincorporated area just north of the Simi Valley City limits along Tapo Canyon road.

Simi PD public info line for residents is 805-583-6100.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

Nightime community college classes at Fillmore High were cancelled Tuesday. The Ventura College evening classes at Santa Paula High will happen. No word on the situation for Wednesday.

ROAD CLOSURES

Highway 126 eastbound in Piru. Piru Canyon Road north of Piru. C Street in Fillmore between Old Telegraph and Meadow Lark, Goodenough Road in Fillmore, Pacific Coast Highway between Kanan Road in Malibu and Topanga Canyon Road in Pacific Palisades, and Malibu Canyon Road at PCH.

It came to me that the Star on-line is doing what radio used to do--alerting the locals of impending problems and updating people about local conditions.

With increasing media consoidation, local stations are disappearing. Proposed new rules are increasing media monopoly. No one home when problems emerge locally--toxic spills, floods, fires, etc..

In a sense, the internet has become the radio of yore, the first line of defense. Now I'm thinking one newspaper can't handle this responsiblity. Some folks don't have the e capability.

I'm thinking about that. Maybe the people's airways ought to extend to the Internet. This kind of need, this kind of power, this kind of public service ought to require that everyone have access.

Seems like more public service is required, like more regulation, not less. Some municipalities are working toward universal access. Why not ours? Sure you can talk to your neighbors with access but . . . what if no nighbor has it?

Sitting here under a pall of grey that hurts my chest, irritates my nose and makes me think radical thoughts. Bad things are coming down the pike. We need our neighbors. We need each other. It's not socialism, it's common sense and human nature to stick together.

layservantofjmj - what source are you using to confirm 1.5 miles? KTVA is reporting within 3 miles:

Updated 6:00 PM Tuesday...

"RANCH FIRE"

The Ranch Fire has burned to within 3 miles of Fillmore. It is still an active fire with flare ups. Ventura County Fire Captain Barry Parker tells KVTA NEWS as of 3 PM today (Tuesday) that while the wind is not as bad as Sunday and Monday, it is still hot and dry and dangerous. He says the fire is hard to access, and they are short on personnel and equipment.

People who live along Goodenough Road in Fillmore, and Grand Avenue just west of the city, and all of Piru are still under recommended evacuation notices. The "Ranch Fire" has burned 54,518 acres It is just 10% contained with full containment expected on Halloween.

Posted by JTelcontar on October 23, 2007 at 6:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

KVTA:

"Updated 6:30 PM Tuesday...

"RANCH FIRE"

The fire has slowed considerably with the reduced winds. The plan is to hit it "with everything we've got" at first light Wednesday to stop it at Oat Mountain. Acreage has been reduced after they did an aerial flight to remap. It is now at 47,240 acres. Still, just 10% contained with full containment forecast for Halloween."

I've never blogged here before but I read EVERYDAY. I just have one silly question that I can't answer on my own. Those of you who live in Fillmore keep referring to the "F". What the heck is the "F"?? Sorry I live in Simi so I'm clueless. :)

Posted by Irishkell on October 23, 2007 at 6:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My husband just called came over Grimes and said the whole backside of the hill directly behind the F is on fire. Looks like there is a vehicle driving up there right now.

Posted by larand on October 23, 2007 at 6:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sillywillygirll, it's a large white F on the hill behind the town. It stands for Fillmore High School.

Posted by Fillmorite on October 23, 2007 at 6:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The F is on the East of town hillside and is put there by the kids in the high school I believe in the 40's. Each year it is chalked by the Freshman Class at the start of the school year. I would say it is 80' tall by 20' wide and is a cut out of the chapparal.

It's really dark and smokey out in Fillmore near Shiells park. The fire can be seen to the left of the F. A glow is visible further west but no fire cresting that mountain yet. I have not found any updates in awhile but from here the flames look small (like it's smoldering almost) compared to a few years ago. The wind has calmed down also. There are alot of lights, fire trucks? moving around on the hill sides.

I Cannot understand why anyone or any company would allow welders out in the open on the windiest day of the year and for the Fire Dept and Press to say, Sorry but it was just an accident. Bull**** they should have to pay and pay dearly for all the evacuations caused along with the Fire Dept charges. Can't companies use just some common judgement and the workers themselves should have been held accountable.
