Fires force schools to shuffle schedule
With fires raging all across Southern California, area high school and college athletic officials canceled outdoor practices Monday and considered contingency plans for a heavy load of events scheduled for today.
Because of unsafe air quality standards, all outdoor activities were either canceled or moved indoors.
The first round of the Pacific View League girls' golf tournament at River Ridge was postponed Monday, said league president Tony Diaz.
The tentative plan calls for counting today's 9-hole round double. The tournament does not determine team qualifiers for next week's CIF-Southern Section postseason tournament. It does serve as a qualifier for the section's individual tournament.
The Moorpark College campus was closed Monday.
Today's Western State Conference men's and women's cross country championships were moved from Moorpark College to Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
"I can't imagine us having that event here (today)," said Moorpark College athletic director Howard Davis.
Royal and Simi Valley canceled classes for students as well as five Marmonte League events on today's sports calendar including indoor girls' volleyball matches — Thousand Oaks at Royal and Simi Valley at Westlake, said Royal athletic coordinator Jim Wilber.
Decisions on other scheduled Marmonte League games will be made early today.
"There is a provision in our league constitution to try and make up games the very next day or the next open date," said Wilber. "Everybody has an opening at the end of the season, if necessary."
Wilber began making phone calls to his athletic coaches Sunday night.
"We want to err on the side of caution," said Wilber. "We'll keep the kids inside if it dictates tomorrow."
With Ventura and Buena on a weeklong fall break, their athletic teams have flexibility in scheduling.
Neither the Ventura girls' volleyball or tennis teams had a match scheduled for this week.
"The cross country team can pack up in cars and drive up to Ojai, where the air quality is much better, and work out there," said Ventura athletic director David Hess.
"The football team doesn't have much of a choice. You can make a plan and the wind can change. If we lose a day (of practice), it won't hurt us that much. We could go inside the gym and do a walk through."
Buena's gym is closed for resurfacing this week, said athletic director Tina Wright.
The JV and freshmen teams will practice in the school's cafeteria. The football team had a scheduled walk through inside the Ventura College gym on Monday.
Today's scheduled Buena home Channel League boys' water polo game against Santa Barbara is on hold.
"We'll have to figure out what the pool looks like," said Wright.
Ventura College canceled today's scheduled home women's soccer match against Santa Barbara City College. Also canceled were Wednesday men's and women's water polo games at Santa Monica College, said co-athletic director Greg Winslow.
All aquatics activities on the campus were shutdown because of unsafe conditions.
"We've pulled everything indoors," said Winslow.
Monday was a light day for football, so VC looked at film and did a walk-through.
"Basketball and volleyball will shorten practice in the gym to accommodate the outdoor teams," said Winslow. "Basically we all have to work together."
