Officials have expanded evacuation recommendations to all of Piru and parts of Fillmore as fears over the Ranch Fire's spread intensify.
The Ranch Fire grew overnight from 10,000 to 29,000 acres. It was only 10 percent contained as of 7 a.m.
The Nightsky fire in the Santa Rosa Valley is now 100% contained with full control expected by about 5 pm.
Engines and crews remain on-scene putting out small fires within yesterday's burn area and providing structure protection. The fire was contained at 35 acres.
And firefighters are responding to a number of small fires in Ventura County this afternoon.
RANCH FIRE / PIRU
The Ranch fire, a mile away from Highway 126, north of Piru, is starting to surround the town.
But firefighters aren't able to gauge exactly where the fire is headed because of difficult flying conditions, said Capt. Barry Parker of the Ventura County Fire Department. Wind gusts have reached up to 70 mph.
Firefighters are unable to directly fight the fire because of that wind.
Instead, they are working to protect structures.
"There isn't any amount of firetrucks you can stack up and make a difference on this fire," Parker said. ""You can't hardly stand up let alone get in front of it."
With winds expected to continue through Tuesday, firefighters are bracing for the worst. Parker said he's worried the Ranch fire will join the Castaic fire. They want to keep it from moving south of the 126.
"If this were the only fire in southern California we would have hundreds of firetrucks here," he said.
But there are fires all over southern California today.
"We can't expect a lot of resources," he said.
Although the fire has not reached the town of Piru, residents have been asked to evacuate to make it easier for firefighters to fight the blaze when it gets there. But so far, most people have been unwilling to go, Parker said.
"People have a false sense of security," he said.
Ventura County Batallion Chief Mike Sidlinger said because a lot of the area burned in a 2003 fire, there's a lot of young grass that is highly flammable, so the fire is moving quickly.
Jose Castaneda of Oxnard was in Piru today to help his children evacuate because some of them have asthma.
"This is the windiest I've ever seen it," he said.
He noted he has cousins from Arizona who are firefighters who have been dispatched to this area.
Gloria Devalos said Piru is a town that really works together and she thinks they can get through this.
"Around here we all look out for each other," she said.
Andy Arias was repairing a garage door that had been damaged in the wind the night before. He said he isn't too worried.
"We've got the river and the park" between the hillsides and the town, he said.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Department has issued recommended evacuations for Piru Canyon, Hasley Canyon and Oak Canyon. Precautionary evacuations have been issued for all of Piru south to Highway 126.
Officials have also recommended precautionary evacuation of Fillmore residents at Foothill Drive, Shady Lane, Ash Circle, Maple couort and Hunter Lane.
The evacuation center is at Fillmore Veterans Memorial Building, 511 Second St., 524-1500.
In Fillmore, roads are closed at C Street between Old Telegraph and Meadowlark. Highway 126 is closed between Main Street in Piru and Chiquita Canyon.
In Piru, streets closed include Hasley Canyon north of Del Valle, Piru Canyon at Orchard, and Piru Canyon at the lake.
One trailer, which may have been a residence at one point, was burned by the Ranch Fire, said Battalion Chief Ranger Dorn of the Ventura County Fire Department. No one was injured.
Wind, smoke and fire have Piru residents on edge.
"I slept in my clothes just to be ready," she said.
Molina and her neighbors were standing on the street watching the smoke over the hill.
Her neighbor Carlos Avila told his wife to pack up their medicine and some bare essentials in case things got worse.
At Lake Piru, deer were running about the charred hillsides as helicopters dipped water from the lake to use to fight nearby fires.
The westbound portion of Highway 126 is closed east of Piru and the eastbound portion is closed in Piru, according to the California Highway Patrol.
NIGHTSKY FIRE / SANTA ROSA VALLEY
The Nightsky Fire, which threatened homes in the eastern Santa Rosa Valley, was declared fully contained at 7 a.m. today.
Officials expect the remaining portion of the blaze to be controlled, or put out, by 5 p.m. today, said Ventura County Fire Capt. Ron Oatman.
The area scorched by the blaze did not grow overnight, and was still estimated at 35 acres today, officials said this morning.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire. The structural damage was limited to a portion of a garage roof at a hilltop estate on Nightsky Drive.
Fire investigators were at that location today, speaking with the homeowner. He declined to speak to a reporter about the incident.
Winds were still raking the Santa Rosa Valley region today, but the community’s public school was in session and Santa Rosa Road was open to traffic and operating normally.
Firefighters continued working at various locations in the area, making sure no new problems occur and continuing their efforts to extinguish the smoldering fire.
Smoke continued to color the sky, most of the smoke coming from other brushfires to the northeast in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
OTHER FIRES / INCIDENTS
A new fire has started near Magic Mountain in Los Angeles County. The fire is currently estimated at 50 acres and is moving to the southwest. Smoke from this fire will certainly blow into Ventura County.
In Simi Valley, crews were fighting a fire in an attic of a home in the 3200 block of Valarie Avenue.
Crews from county and city fire departments are fighting a small brush fire near North Petit Avenue and Foothill Road in Ventura. About a third of an acre was burning about 1 p.m., according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Ventura County crews have knocked down a fire this afternoon near Hitch Boulevard and Ventavo Drive in Moorpark.
The size of the fire was unknown, but the fire department said crews on the site said "a considerable amount of ground" had been burning in a lemon orchard.
County fire officials reported that a hand crew was mopping up any hot spots shortly after 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters worked to keep a fire in a Ventura barranca from igniting homes near Modoc Street and Nevada Avenue this afternoon. Crews from city and county fire departments responded to the fire about 4 p.m. and reported it knocked down by 4:45 p.m.
In Simi Valley, crews extinguished a fire in an attic of a home in the 3200 block of Valarie Avenue this afternoon. Four people, including two in the home and two bystanders, were checked out by medical personnel, but none had to be transported to a hospital.
The fire was reported under control by 1:30 p.m.
The Rose Avenue offramp on Highway 101 in Oxnard was closed about noon, as firefighters put out a small fire that burned debris and some palm trees nearby. The ramp was reported open again at 1 p.m.
Two other fires, one in Simi Valley and one between Ventura and Santa Paula, were reported earlier this morning. Both turned out to be small fires and as of 9:15 a.m. were not posing a serious threat, fire officials said.
All classes at Moorpark College have been cancelled, including classes at the High School at Moorpark College.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reports numerous trees are down throughout the county. There are also numerous accidents, including vehicles into trees and poles.
The Malibu Fire did not grow significantly overnight. It was at 2,200 acres as of early this morning. It is about 10 percent contained.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed a state of emergency for the counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego due to more than eleven major wildfires. Throughout the region, more than 30,000 acres have already burned, and more areas are threatened. The wildfires have burned homes, businesses and other structures.
Weather:
High-wind warnings are still in effect for Ventura and Los Angeles counties, according to the National Weather Service. The warnings will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Winds will be from 30 to 45 mph throughout much of the county, with gusts up to 70 mph in some places. Winds are expected to be from 35 to 50 mph in the mountain areas, with gusts up to 80 or 90 mph.
The relative humidity will continue to be in the single digits and teens for the county throughout the day because of the Santa Ana winds.
Temperatures will be in the upper 80s and mid-90s today along the coast and in the mid 80s to mid 90s inland.

anna, my husband thinks the same thing. thats the bad thing about giving these things so much attention- not that we shouldnt- but then we get these punks that like to copycat for attention. my inlaws live in az and they had a HUGE one a few years back and it was a punk and then some stupid hiker on drugs thought she was lost and started one that joined with it. i used to live in fillmore and the one year we had that big one that burned the F... this is so scary. im sure were not in any danger out here in mugu, but im terrified... not just for my family but for everyone else as well!! i know we need rain but if we get much this winter, these very same houses are going to be sliding down the hills when it does. God bless California and everyone in it!

I live in the UK and saw this on Fox news yesterday. How is Fillmore doing?
Posted by Irishkell on October 22, 2007 at 10:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)
So far where I live in Fillmore, we are doing okay. I understand we are on precautinary watch right now. The winds seem to be blowing SW, have not seen any smoke, but the air is still really thick and smells pretty bad.
Not much update avail for the Piru/Fillmore area on the news. Main focus is on Irvine and now Lake Arrowhead.

DoctorDude ,My thoughts exactly! As well as the firemen. God be with them and thier families!
They went door to door this morning at 6:00 recommending people to leave. Not all have but some have, especially the elderly. They expect it to hit Piru in about four hours I heard. Hopefully and Godwilling they will be able to stop it.

I am having a bit of a difficult time in terms of obtaining consistent information on the Nightsky fire. The information on the KVTA website posted at 8:00 am indicated 60% containment. The information in this article notes 60% containment with continuing concern for some homes. The LA Times is showing the following:
"Night Sky fire in Ventura County is out
Firefighters in Ventura County by late Sunday had extinguished the Night Sky wildfire, which burned 35 acres in the Santa Rosa Valley, causing minor damage to the roof of one residence, said Tom Kruschke, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
"We've had a few small fires here and there,'' Kruschke said. "But the Ranch fire is the big one, and it' s going to impact us until the winds die down.''
The Ranch fire near Castaic is burning into Ventura County. After taking 29,000 acres, the fire was 10% contained, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County emergency management office.
-- Kay Saillant in the Santa Rosa Valley"
60% contained, out, what is the actuality of the situation?

I have been in Fillmore for 60 years and I remember the fire of 1957. It burned a complete circle around town and the went up the Sespe and across Sespe Creek and on to Santa Paula and they finally stoped outside of Ventura. I believe it was the last time San Cayetano Mtn. burned. I remeber houses in the middle of town with shake shingles catching on fire. We have had many other fires but I really do not recall the wind being so strong. Poor Foothill Drive and Pole Creek always catch it.
Our volunteer Fire Dept. has been on alert for over 36 hours now and it hasn't got here yet. They have done everything they can to be prepared but only the winds dying down and the
the good Lord will keep us from losing houses.
Sure am glad they will not let any houses be built on the north end of town up the hillsides.
They would be sure to go.

Does anyone know how Wes Thompson range is doing and it's owner Mike Thompson? We got evacuated from the range around 3 pm yesterday and firemen were gonna use the range as a staging ground or soemthing, since Mike gave them access to his 40,000 gallon water tank. I really do hope he's doing ok.

No not at this time Rachel. Guiberson is on the south side of the Santa Clara river about 2 mile from the center of Fillmore. The only way it would have a problem is if embers blew over there and started another fire.

My husband just called me from Castaic where he is working. If you hike up to the crest, you can see the flames in the valley below. Very eerie. Also, the planes and choppers are coming to the lake to get water. He says that movies and TV shows are shot there all the time and that this is absolutely surreal. You would think they're filming a motion picture, but this is real life. He says it is absolutely mesmerizing. Once again, many thanks to all the firefighters. Please keep yourselves safe.

from the KTVA.com website: update on Ranch fire:
Updated Noon Monday...
The "Ranch Fire" has destroyed one residence in Ventura County according to an official with the Ventura County Fire Department. Captain Barry Parker told KVTA News that a remote ranch house north of Lake Piru burned in the fire which has blackened more than 29,000 acres. He had no further information.
The "Ranch Fire" is threatening Piru and Val Verde. Parker said they are short on resources and given that, and the nature of the weather, They are in a "defensive mode" which means they are protecting structures, but not aggressively trying to stop the fire's advance. He says of critical importance is not allowing the fire to get south of Highway 126 in the Val Verde area east of Piru.
The entire town of Piru is under a recommended evacuation notice.
The fire is still some distance from Fillmore but sections of Fillmore that back up to wildland areas are under a precautionary evacuation notice, which means people should be ready to leave, should the need arise. Those areas include parts of the city that border the wildland fire areas.
An evacuation center has been set up by the Red Cross at the Veterans Memorial Building at 511 Second Street in Fillmore.
Animal evacuations area as follows...large to the fairgrounds in Ventura, small to the animal shelter at Camarillo Airport. For more information or help call 1-866-387-8911.
Highway 126 is closed in both directions between Center Street in Piru and Chiquito Canyon in Santa Clarita.
Smoke from the fire has prompted a health alert for extreme air pollution (see the news section for full text of smoke health advisory).
Meanwhile, the "Canyon Fire" in Malibu has damaged or destroyed dozens of structures and burned more than 2200 acres. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan and Topanga Canyon. Malibu Canyon is closed at PCH.

Ok, everyone, I know you are good caring people and I would really value your opinion about something I saw yesterday, and if I should have done anything. I was at the Target parking lot in Ventura - right around 3:00 in the afternoon, when the smoke and ash was so dark and swirling, we all had our headlights on like it was night. It was almost impossible to breath. There was a homeless woman with a panhandling sign at the exit, and playing all around her was a very small child. I'm not heartless toward the homeless, but I found myself angry that this woman would subject her tiny girl to that horrible air - we all know how vulnerable children and the elderly are in these situations. It seemed like a case of serious neglect to me, and yet...she's homeless - what's the use of saying anything if she doesn't have a safe building to get into, or of notifying the police? There was a car parked nearby that clearly was connected to her - it seemed like at least she could have put the child in the car and have her breath through a cloth or something - I think she was old enough to take that instruction. Short of notifying the police or inviting her to live in my house, I didn't know what to do! I'm interested to know how others would have handled it.

mgm- being homeless isnt an excuse to subject your child to this!! she shouldnt have the child if she cant take care of it! she could have gone inside target and there are lots of shelters she can go to.. or her car like you said. i would have said something to her and if she did nothing, probably called the police...? i dont know- why would she do that to her child!? i have kept ALL 5 of my kids inside for the last 48 hrs!!! we are going nuts but i dont want them breathing that junk!!

In regards to mgm seeing the children - We were in South L.A. when my husband, a L.A. County firefighter noticed a child in the car. Although the weather was cooperating and the windows slightly opened, he called the police dept. As soon as the patrol car approched, the mother finally came out of the shop (the car was parked in the street in front of a store). It's a shame that mgm's reported call received that kind of remark.

We've just posted an update that includes info on some of the smaller fires breaking out in various areas. We've also split the story up into sections with sub-headlines "Ranch Fire," "Nightsky Fire" and "Other Fires." Hopefully this will help you find what you need. Also, know that the VCFD fireline site at times includes reports of fires that have not been checked out yet. We generally won't report on those until firefighters have checked out the fire and we can get some solid info. There's lots going on and we're trying to stay on top of everything and posting updates as often as we can. We also watch these comments, so keep posting and letting us know what you're seeing.

Thanks to everyone for the updates around Ventura County. My husband has been at the fireline in Malibu since early Sunday morning and while he's trying to do his best there, I'm trying to hold down the fort here at my home in Moorpark. Had a scare yesterday with the Night Sky fire since that was across the street from my backyard. Took the initiative to load my car eventhough we were not in imminent danger, but the fire was close enough for me. Any update on the fire in Moorpark would be appreciated since that part of Moorpark is where my parents live.

mgm-there is a law against leaving a child of 6 or younger under unattended in a vehicle-Kaitlyn’s Law.
Maybe she didn't even have enough money for an evening meal? Did you ask her if she was hungry? I've never had anyone turn me down when I ask. (I don't usually ask the panhandlers-there is this one guy with headphones, and a stool, and a printed sign that I have seen all over the county. It's a regular thing for him.)

Has the County updated where the Ranch fire is in relation to Fillmore. I am looking up the Sespe and there seems to be a big head of smoke in the Condor refuge.
Our winds have quieted some.

News is tough to get in Ventura County unless you're a Spanish speaking person! You can try FM 88.3 on the hour for news and detailed local fire updates. AM 1070 has much better coverage than KCAL9's TV stuff but both mostly cover areas south of us. OFN could provide us with a decent, constantly-updated map graphically showing the areas affected by fire. Perhaps those of us not native to Sunny Southern could learn the local names for all those areas!

Fillmorite, we're really trying to find out what the borders of the fire are and create a more detailed map but we're having a tough time. InciWeb usually creates fire maps, but their site has been down most of the day and when it is up, there is no map.

ShelleyCam - I hear you, but my delimma wasn't whether or not the woman or her child were hungry, it was should her child be subjected to this air, regardless of her mother's situation? I do often go through a drive through and pick up a quick burger and coffee for these people and hand it to them, but that does nothing to help the child in this instance. Next time I will be prepared - I'm going to educate myself on the shelters and where they are and what exactly they can and can't do for a child in a situation like this. It seems a better way to go than calling the police who either, it sounds like, won't do much, or might take child away from a parent, albeit an ill equipped one. That might end up happening anyway, but the shelters(I am hoping)seem the best and most responsive places to start. Thank you to everyone who responded.

Could be trouble...I just saw another fire start up right next to Magic Mountain. 3 Tankers dropping water immediatly as I'm sure they do not want this one to get away on them. A whole new mountain range. With the current wind direction could get the fire could get to Simi and Moorpark.

LA County is utilizing everything they have and everyone they can recall to the fires and also to man the stations. My husband has been at the Malibu fire since 6:30 a.m. Sunday and he has completely lost his voice. All of LA County's resources are being utilized, as well as the other departments. Yet, on the news, the political representative from Orange County vented out, "Where are the air resources? We need them badly down here!" I don't think he realizes what it takes to have air resources (availablity of aircrafts, making sure that the aircraft is mechanically safe, weather factor, etc....) My thoughts go to ALL the firefighting personnel as they try and battle the ravaging fires throughout Southern California!!!

Fillmore is now on high alert because there is a glow showing up the Sespe about Squaw Flats and Squaw and Oak Flats truck trails at the end of goodenough rd. Goodenough rd and Grand Ave are being warned of possible evacuations. It seems that the fire is going to run down the Sespe Canyon Rather than Pole Creek Canyon. So the outlying County areas will be hit first. Expected crest into the Sespe is about 1 hour away.

The fire seems to be south of the ranger station traveling south west. It is up in the oil fields and running 2 ridges over from going down to Goodenough Rd. Fillmore Fire is trying to notify the people who live at the top of Teatsort Rd. on the top of the hill to let them know that the fire is coming their way. It really was the County Fire's job or the Sheriff's Dept but they do not have a clue. They have not got permission to even notify the people on Goodenough that the fire is right behind them. If you live on Goodenough I would pack and get ready. If you know of anyone who lives on Goodenough Rd I would call them and tell them that the Sheriff's Dept has dropped the ball and they need to pack their stuff and get ready to go especially if they have large animals.

the Fillmore Gazette online plus the links I posted at 810pm are good. So far the North East end of Fillmore is on evacuation. The rest of us are just waiting. We're on the North West side and all is OK as of now.

This is the latest on the gazette's site
Latest Fire Update - Monday 10/22/07 - 9:55 p.m.
Although an orange glow from the fire is visible from some areas of the city of Fillmore, the fire is still an estimated 3-4 miles away.
There is active fire burning in Holser and Piru canyons that may be visible from a distance. This activity is being closely monitored. Active fire came through portions of the Condor Preserve in the Hopper Canyon area today, but none of the facilities were lost. This flank of the fire is continuing to move in a westerly direction towards Fillmore.

From Bardsdale you can see 2 instances of fire on the middle of the 3 ridges of mountains visible over Fillmore. The is also a noticeable glow up the Sespe, probably up Goodenough Rd. It looks to be slightly NE of the mobil home park. Coming across the Santa Clara River bridge into Fillmore it appears there is a fire in the river bed 2 to 3 miles to the east (not totally sure, so don't freak out). Up on Foothill you can't see anything with the way the topography is. However there is no fire equipment here anymore. The 5 or 6 units that gave the evacuation papers left about 6:20 pm. Don't know anything more.

Right now we're fairly confident (yet packed and ready to go) that it wont make it to west Fillmore. I'm not expert though

I live in Santa Paula, I just left fillmore... and from 10th street you can see the fire coming into santa paula, looks like it is going to miss the city itself and move into the hills above, not such a good thing for me because I live on foothill Rd directly on the hill

The Sheriff's are on Grand reccomending evacuation of Grand and Goodenough. We're getting ready to go.

The concern is not just whether the Ranch fire comes into Ventura, which is unlikely. There is however a legitimate concern that a minor local fire, e.g. Foothill/N. Petit fire, can become a major fire. Like jenmoore, I'm not taking any chances. I'd rather be prepared if the winds bring a fire to my door regardless of its initial origin.

That sounds like a good idea - i.e. Venturans getting ready. They were saying that the Canyon Country fire moved 20 miles in one hour and residents had NO warning to evacuate! Ventura is only about 30 miles from Fillmore and the winds are blowing South West right now. Also, the Stevenson Ranch fire that started not too long ago moved all the way to the ocean last time (I believe 2003). These babys can move fast with heavy wind and it is going to be hard to sleep tonight. I can smell thick smoke in the air right now in Midtown Ventura.

Is anyone on Grand Avenue still watching? I am on Goodenough and can't see behind me. We're packed to go but I was wondering what you see.

Can I get a status of the 126? Have the fires jumped the 126 at Piru?
