Area runners, teams shine at Mt. SAC Invitational

It was a memorable day for the Westlake High cross country program Saturday at the Mount San Antonio College Invitational in Walnut.

Ventura County teams won three team titles, one individual championship, Simi Valley's Liberty Miller had one of the fastest girls' times in the two-day meet and Royal lived up to its Top 10 Division I section ranking by placing ninth in the Super Sweepstakes boys' race.

Westlake swept Division II boys' and girls' heats.

In its Division II boys' race, Westlake won with 100 points. Garrett Drogosch was eighth in 16 minutes, 31 seconds. Marcus Lam was 10th in 16:35. Victoria Smith (19:45) and Jasmine Hayes (19:49) placed third and fourth, respectively, as Westlake won its Division II girls' race with 55 points.

Behind Jenny Mallen's winning time of 18:38, Newbury Park won its Division II race with 38 points.

In one of the area's top girls' team performances, Simi Valley was eighth in the individual sweepstakes. Miller was second in 17:33, which tied for the 13th best overall time.

Three Royal runners bettered 16 minutes in the boys' Super Sweepstakes race. Travis Edwards was 18th in 15:31. Alex Routh was 22nd in 15:33.

Buena and Camarillo had Division II boys' runner-up finishes.

Chris Frias (15:55) and Mark Martinez (16:10) were second and ninth, respectively, as Buena placed second to Mountain View, 91-97.

Camarillo had five runners in the top 30 in its race. Freshman Heyden Wooff (16:33) and Joey Elkins (16:47) were fifth and ninth for Camarillo.

On Friday, La Reina placed seventh in the Division IV girls' sweepstakes race. Sarah Pearson (19:15) was fourth.

Thacher was fifth in its Division IV/V race with 172 points.

COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Redlands 0

At Cal Lutheran

Highlights: Cal Lutheran — Mackenzie Porter had one goal and an assist. Augrie Smith scored her seventh goal of the season in the 48th minute. Brittany Clark assisted. Danielle Balderrama also scored. Kristin Borzi had three saves. Redlands — Tenley Rawlings had two saves.

Records: Cal Lutheran 6-8-3, 5-3-2 SCIAC; Redlands 7-5-3, 5-4-1.

MEN'S WATER POLO

Cal Lutheran 17, Caltech 6

At Caltech

Highlights: Cal Lutheran — Freshman Antonio McNeil and Sam Lovetro had four goals. Michael Blanchard and Jared Vermillion had two goals. Jordan Bouey had six saves.

Record: Cal Lutheran 9-12, 2-1 SCIAC.

Ventura places fifth

At Golden West Tournament

Highlights: Ventura — The Pirates finished with three wins against Santa Rosa, Grossmont, and L.A. Valley, and one loss to Long Beach. The Pirates' leading scorers for the tournament were Jeremy Allen and Scott Siman, who each had 10 goals. Siman also had seven steals. Jake Karluk had an additional nine goals. Goalkeeper Andrew Trow finished the tournament with 25 saves on goal and six steals.

Record: Ventura 14-9, 2-1 WSC North.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Ventura 3, santa barbara city 0

At Ventura, Friday

Scores 30-19, 33-31, 31-29.

Highlights: Ventura — Keisha O'Brien had 29 kills and three blocks. Danielle Vaughn added another 12 kills and recorded 11 digs. Rachel Moore finished with two blocks and eight kills.

Record: Ventura 10-4, 2-0 WSC North.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Westmark 20, Ventura County Christian 12

At Ventura Country Christian

Highlights: Ventura County Christian — Cheyne Eppard had a huge game for the Stars. On offense, he went 3 for 4 with 129 yards passing and two touchdowns; a 79-yard throw to Adam Flores and then a 16-yard reception to Tyler Smith. He also had 58 yards rushing on 11 attempts. He also led the team defensively with 22 tackles.

Record: Ventura County Christian , 1-2 Omega League.

Cate 49, thacher 39

At Cate

Highlights: Cate — Matt Degroot completed 8 of 10 passes for 175 yards and six TDs as Cate clinched the Condor League championship. Thacher — Griffin Triplett rushed for 158 yards and three TDs on 17 carries and threw one TD pass. Triplett also had 10 tackles, two for losses, and recovered a fumble. Will Oberndorf rushed for 102 yards and one TD on 15 carries. Chris Thomas had 10 tackles and one caused fumble. Thacher hosts Laguna Blanca on Saturday in a game to decide the league runner-up.

Records: Cate 6-0, 3-0 Condor; Thacher , 0-1.

Laguna Blanca 74, cornerstone 40

At Laguna Blanca

Highlights: Cornerstone — John Rossie rushed 17 times for 183 yards and two TDs. Willie Kudera completed 16 of 31 passes for 257 yards and two TDs. Jordan Bridges caught six passes for 117 yards and one TD.

Records: Cornerstone 4-3, Laguna Blanca 2-5.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Thatcher 3, Cate 1

At Thatcher

Scores 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25.

Highlights: Thatcher — Maddi Sowash had 13 kills and four blocks. Anne Turner recorded 10 more kills. Setter Mackenzie Boss had 31 assists and two kills.

Records: Thatcher 10-7, Condor League; Cate 8-8, 0-4.

BOYS' WATER POLO

Malibu 10, Righetti 6

At Malibu

Highlights: Malibu — Sean Merrick, Carter Baldwin and Alex Greenberg scored nine of the 10 goals, with three each. Baldwin also recorded 11 steals.

Record: Malibu 20-3, 6-1 Tri-Valley League.

Oxnard Alumni 8, Oxnard Varsity 7

At Oxnard High

Highlights: Oxnard — The Yellowjackets celebrated 50 years of water polo with a game between their current varsity squad and an assortment of alumni from as far back as 1964. Oxnard's current assistant coach, John Castilano, and Rio Mesa assistant coach, Cecilio Murillo, played for the alumni.
