Dodgers shift flagship radio back to KABC

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers will return their flagship radio station to KABC (790 AM) next season, leaving KFWB (980 AM) after five years.

KABC carried Dodgers games for 25 years, from 1973 through 1997. The multiyear deal announced Monday takes effect Nov. 1 and gives the station rights to broadcast all 162 regular-season games and 15 spring training games.

Dodgers games will continue to be heard on KVEN (1450 AM) in Ventura as part of a radio network the team said has "nearly 20 stations."

The move to KABC doesn't help listeners in eastern Ventura County very much who have had difficulty in picking up either KFWB or KVEN at night and had similar trouble with KABC when it previously carried the games. The announcement from the Dodgers, however, said KABC's signal "covers all five counties in Los Angeles."

The Dodgers also announced that broadcasters Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday have had their contracts extended through 2009. Vin Scully's contract runs through next season, his 59th with the team.

The deal with KABC includes a weekly Sunday night call-in show, along with pregame and postgame shows and several specials during the season.

KABC's contract also calls for cross-promotion on sister station KLOS (95.5 FM) and on outdoor advertising.

An offer for a new deal with KFWB was taken off the table by the team last month.

The Dodgers' first flagship station was KMPC (710 AM, now known as KSPN) from 1958 to 1960. That was followed by KFI (640 AM) from 1961 to 1972, KABC from 1973 to 1997, KXTA (1150 AM, now known as KTLK) from 1998 to 2002, and KFWB from 2003 to 2007.

The Dodgers announced earlier this year they would also switch their Spanish-language station next season from KWKW (1330 AM) to KHJ (930 AM).
