The Ventura County Health Care Agency's new mobile mammography unit, in an effort to reach more women, will have its first clinic Oct. 26 at the Camarillo Health Care District.

The vehicle, a large truck with a mobile radiology lab inside, will be in the parking lot of the district office, 3639 E. Las Posas Road, Camarillo. It will provide mammograms from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception will be held before the clinic. The event starts at 8 a.m., and will include city, county and healthcare officials.

The mobile mammography program was developed in an effort to reduce barriers that prevent women from having regular mammograms, particularly the poor or those who otherwise have limited access to medical services.

The mobile clinic will accept all types of insurance and will also connect women who need financial assistance with programs that help with the cost of the exams. Patients will need a doctor's order for the exam.

The mobile unit is the result of eight years of planning, preparation and fundraising by the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation and the Ventura County Cancer Task Force, which was convened by the foundation in 2001.

The task force focused on the mobile unit as a way to increase screening for breast cancer, which would also lead to earlier detection and treatment, and potentially improve overall survival rates.

The Health Care Agency will provide staffing and medical services for the mobile clinic, including follow-up care, if needed. The unit is expected to provide mammography services in at least 10 locations each month at county clinics and other health sites.

Additional clinic days are being scheduled throughout the county. For information on the mobile clinic or to schedule an appointment, call 652-6080.
