Westlake stops Royal in the end

Lukas Freeman sacked Royal High quarterback Trevor Shubert in the end zone with 1:14 left in the game to preserve a 37-27 Westlake win at Royal on Friday night in a Marmonte League game.

Trailing by eight points, Royal (1-5, 0-3) took possession on its own 20-yard line with just less than two minutes left in the game, and a chance to drive for the tying score.

The rainy conditions wreaked havoc when Royal lined up in a shotgun formation, as the ball slipped loose and Shubert fell on it for a 16-yard loss. On the next play, Shubert was sacked in the end zone.

Westlake (3-3, 2-1), running the no-huddle offense throughout, never trailed in the game, scoring first on an 8-yard run by Cooper Shockley midway through the first quarter.

Four minutes later, Westlake attempted to extend its lead by three points on a 42-yard field-goal attempt by Jordan Mannisto, but the kick was blocked by Michael Leipzig. Mannisto later missed attempts from 52 and 47 yards that were both long enough, but sailed wide.

All six of Mannisto's kickoffs were touchbacks.

On its first drive of the second quarter, Royal got on the board when Derek Morris scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Royal's extra-point attempt was blocked by Steve Hagy, and Westlake held a 7-6 advantage.

Westlake answered with a 68-yard touchdown drive capped off by Shockley's 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-6 lead at halftime.

Shockley rushed 26 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

Westlake scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Its first score was a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nick Owens to James De La Cerna. Its second was another pass from Owens, this time 45 yards to Curtis Peterson.

Owens completed 17 of 25 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Trailing 28-6 midway through the third quarter, Royal still had plenty of spirit left as it drove 80 yards for a touchdown. The drive was keyed by a 33-yard run from Morris, who capped it with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Morris scored four touchdowns and gained 151 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Early in the third quarter Morris scored on a 23-yard run to cut Westlake's lead to 28-21, but Justin Lilley returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

Royal was down, but still not out. Once again starting from its own 20-yard line, Royal drove 80 yards for a touchdown. Again, Morris scored, this time on an 11-yard pass from Shubert on fourth-and-goal, making the score 35-27 after the extra point kick was missed.
