Donor challenges others to give more

Shirley McCafferty has seen people standing on street corners "begging for anything," the "for sale" signs all over neighborhoods, and newspaper stories about others who are down and out.

She's seen all of this in Ventura, the town she's called home since childhood. So the retired schoolteacher decided to increase her usual Bellringer contribution to $100 this year, along with a message she delivered Monday.

"I gave more than I usually give," said McCafferty, who has donated to Bellringer since its inception, "and I hope more people do the same. This year, I think people need it more. They are like one paycheck away, you know? And the problem is money. These are going to be hard times, they really are."

The Star's annual Bellringer drive will run through Christmas, with the newspaper publishing lists of readers' contributions daily. Although the newspaper acknowledges all contributions, donors can remain anonymous if desired. All money raised will be given to the Salvation Army to serve needy local people.

New donors:

With so many people having financial difficulty this year, I do hope people will dig deeper than usual to help those in need. Shirley A. McCafferty: $100.

Today's total: $100.

Previous total: $100.

Total to date: $200.
