JW Racing Wins Back-to-Back Championships
BLYTHE, CA - Another exciting weekend unfurled as the West Coast Pro Trucks racing series called an end to its racing season at I-10 Speedway Saturday. The cold weather and sunny sky made for some aggressive track battles and spectacular passes on the ¼-mile odd-shaped oval.
Jeff Williams and crew made their way to the race track on Friday still stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner. The new body on the truck earned many compliments from fellow racers. The truck turned laps as fast as it looked in practice. With only two new Goodyear's on the right and very old left side tires, Williams was able to get the 28 around the track faster than anyone else.
During Saturdays afternoon practice the 28 truck tried on some new shoes on all four corners and ran like hell! Williams pulled off the track after consistently turning times below the track record. He wanted to save what he could for qualifying and the 50-lap main event.
Qualifying started at 3 pm, but that proved to be a little late. Half the track was in shadows and the cold weather did not help conditions. The 28 turned a fast time of 15.200, which proved good enough to qualify on pole.
Williams and crew decided to run the tires from Friday practice for the Trophy Dash. Considering he only had to start the main event to win the Championship, Williams did not go for the win and just hung with the pack for the 4-lap dash.
The 50-lap main event was up next and the number 28 Spectre Performance, SinFuel Choppers, Rare Parts.com, Torco Racing Fuel flamed Ford F-150 would start in the third position. In the first 10-laps there were a few spinouts that fed the caution flags. Once everyone got into a rhythm the racing was good. Williams passed the 17 truck of David Timewell for the lead early in the race. Timewell did not make it easy, but eventually he got stuck on the outside and Williams made the pass.
The 28 was on fire! Not like the way the last race ended. The truck was so fast through the corners it passed lap traffic without a problem. Williams was able to pass up to fourth place and could see third as the checkered dropped giving him his sixth-win of the season and second championship in a row.
Williams celebrated with some donuts in turn 1 and then held his arms high in front of the large crowd as he stood on the door of his truck.
