Indira Kaljo scored 23 points and Jenelle Conklin scored 13 points, but the Ventura College women's basketball team fell to its first loss of the season, 81-77, to Santa Ana College in the final of the Vaquero Shootout Sunday evening in Glendale.

Ventura (3-1), ranked No. 5 in Southern California, trailed by 14 points, 54-40, with 14:45 to play but closed hard. It had several possessions to tie the game in the final two minutes, the final coming when Lindsay Trout's game-tying 3-pointer bounced off with five seconds to play.

No. 13 Santa Ana (4-2) gained a measure of revenge over Ventura, which had eliminated the Dons, 71-59, in the second round of the Southern California regional playoffs last March.

"We learned some valuable lessons," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "No one's going to roll over for us."

Freshman point guard Michelle Santizo added seven points, nine rebounds and three steals off the bench.

Freshman Cassie Rico and sophomore Jamie Glover combined for 46 points and eight 3-pointers for Santa Ana, which hit 13 3s.

Santa Ana led 15-7 when Ventura responded with a 7-0 run on layups by Randi Hicks and Eja Wong and one of Kaljo's four 3-pointers.

Santa Ana led 38-35 at the half and pushed its lead to 54-40 by turning six VC turnovers into four 3s in the first 5:15 of the second half.

A Kaljo 3-point play sparked a 11-5 VC run. The Pirates took a 73-72 lead with 2:52 to play on a Conklin layup off a Wong pass, but the Dons scored nine of the game's last 13 points.

"It's still early," said Mircetic. "We haven't set our rotation yet. We'd like to win every game, but realistically, the (tournament season) is a time to learn."
