Hate crimes decline in Ventura County

The number of hate crimes reported in Ventura County dropped in 2006, according to a report released today by the FBI.

In 2006, 25 hate crimes were reported in the county, compared with 30 in 2005, the FBI reported.

A hate crime is defined as an offense motivated by a bias against a race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity or disability.

Nationwide, the number of reported hate crimes increased to 7,722 in 2006, from 7,163 in 2005.

Racially motivated incidents accounted for about 52 percent of the crimes. Religious bias came next, followed by sexual orientation and ethnicity. Those categories accounted for about 19, 16 and 13 percent of hate crimes, respectively. Just 1 percent of crimes related to disabilities.

In Ventura County, 10 of the crimes reported in 2006 were motivated by bias against a religion, nine related to race, four to ethnicity and two to sexual orientation.

The highest number of hate crimes — eight — were reported in Camarillo. Five were reported in both Simi Valley and Ventura.

In 2005, the cities with the most reported hate crimes were Thousand Oaks with seven, Moorpark with six and Ventura with five.
