ART IN THE SKY
A 30 foot high stainless steel rod now pierces the sky above the outdoor courtyard of the VenturaCountyGovernmentCenter, at 800 S. Victoria Avenue, Ventura.
Ventura sculptor Bill McEwen and his welder Bill Maguire presided over the placement of McEwen's 1,200 lb. sculpture "Organic Form I: Activity at transitionpoints; defined space" as it was hoisted by the crane operated by Harry Waycasey. "A major, universal principal of nature's construction is that the greatest, most intense activity and emphasis occurs at transition points, both in science and art." stated McEwen in describing the inspiration for his work. "This 30 foot high, marine, stainless steel sculpture illustrates that principle. The obvious transition points are at the base connection of the organic form and at the organic form/tall pipe connective angle. At those transitional intersections are found the active, emphasizing, cable constructions and shorter pipes. The upright 25 foot pipe and rod define the otherwise undefined negative space; thus the complement cross emphasis of positive/negative space. Opposites are found in the geometric straight lines of the pipes vs. the curved lines of the cables and organic form," he concluded.
The sculpture will remain in place on the outdoor courtyard pedestal for approximately one year. The placement of the sculpture is sponsored by the Ventura County Arts Council Visual Arts Committee as part of a program of temporary sculpture installations on the permanent pedestal.
