Oxnard College's Cisneros will make run at title today
Oxnard College sophomore Miguel Cisneros will race for a state cross country championship this morning in Fresno.
Cisneros, the back-to-back Western State Conference individual champion, will run alongside his teammates in the California Community College championships at Woodward Park.
The Oxnard men and the Ventura College women's team both finished 14th in the Southern California championships to earn the final qualifying spot.
Cisneros' biggest competition is Daniel Gonia of San Diego Mesa, who won the regional meet as Cisneros was ill and finished seventh.
"It's going to be an interesting showdown," said Oxnard coach Gino Sharp. "Now Miguel has something to run for; he's beaten everyone else in the field before."
Oxnard received a boost this week as Dieter Duran was granted eligibility to race by the CCCAA. He could be the Condors' third finisher behind Cisneros, alongside teammates Juan Romero, Cesar Lopez and Jose Lopez.
Soccer playoffs: The Oxnard men's soccer team, seeded No. 7 after winning its first outright WSC title, hosts Santa Barbara City at 2 p.m. today in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs.
The women's soccer playoffs also begin today. Unbeaten WSC North champion Moorpark, seeded No. 10, will visit Santa Barbara City at 7 p.m. No. 15 Ventura travels to No. 2 Cerritos for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
