SAN DIMAS — Oaks Christian School didn't bring the No. 1 divisional ranking into the playoffs as it did the last three seasons, but it's sure has the appearance of one.

Winning for the 18th consecutive time in the postseason, unseeded Oaks Christian (8-3) had 473 total yards as it rolled to a 56-27 win over Valle Vista League co-champion San Dimas on Friday night in a Northwest Division first-round game.

Oaks Christian, which has won four consecutive section championships, will face No. 2 seed Serra at home next Friday.

Christopher Potter had 302 all-purpose yards, while Malcolm Jones and Ryan Landseadel scored twice for Oaks Christian.

And there was more bad news for Northwest Division opponents. Wide receiver Chris Owusu, making his first appearance in five games, caught three passes for 40 yards and one touchdown in limited duty.

Drawing a parallel between this Oaks Christian team, which tied Nordhoff and Oak Park for the Tri-Valley League title, and the program's section championship teams is difficult, said coach Bill Redell.

"Those other teams peaked from Day 1," Redell said. "This one has taken a while to come together. They turned the corner four weeks ago."

In those four weeks, Oaks Christian has outscored its opponents 159-47.

Potter agreed with Redell's assessment.

"Each team is different," said Potter, who was the team's No. 1 receiver on its 2006 Division III state championship team. "Players come and they go. The chemistry and bonding come as we play together. Everybody on this team is willing to play any position on the field."

Potter rushed for 131 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs of 6 and 20 yards. Rushing for more than 100 yards for the 10th time this season, Jones carried the ball 17 times for 132 yards and scored on runs of 53 and 9 yards.

San Dimas, primarily known for its running game, was effective the few times it put the ball up in the air.

Quarterback Mick Kalmar completed 7 of 10 passes for 199 yards and two TDs.

"We're going to have to work on our coverage in the secondary," said Redell.

Oaks Christian could do no wrong in the first half.

The Lions scored on seven of their eight possessions and had 338 yards in total offense as they sprinted to a 42-14 lead.

Defensively, Oaks Christian pulled the plug on a San Dimas running game. San Dimas, averaging 335 yards rushing per game, had only 31 yards on 15 carries.

Potter completed 8 of 10 passes for 149 yards and rushed seven times for 80 yards and two scores in the first half.

Jones had 101 yards on nine carries, scored on a 53-yard run, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.

Making his first appearance since sustaining a knee injury midway into the regular season, Owusu caught three passes for 40 yards and scored on an 11-yard TD reception in the first half.

San Dimas tied the game at 7-7 on an 82-yard screen pass from Mick Kalmar to Nico Barbone with 5:47 left in the first quarter. Barbone also scored on a 3-yard run with 3:04 left in the half.

One of the top teams in the Valle Vista League in scoring defense, San Dimas had allowed only one team to score more than 14 points in a game all season. Oaks Christian had 21 by the end of the first quarter and 28 points less than five minutes into the second quarter.

By that time, Oaks Christian was well on its way.
