BASEBALL
Royal's Magill headed to Cal Poly SLO
Matt Magill, a right-handed senior pitcher from Royal High, signed his national letter of intent for Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo on Wednesday to play Division I baseball.
"It feels so good to finally sign. I am excited to go to Cal Poly. The school has strong academics and a great location," Magill said. "I like that they are a competitive team in the Big West Conference. ... I know the overall package fits me very well."
Magill was heavily recruited this summer after an appearance in the Area Code games. Some of the schools were Cal State Northridge, Clemson, Irvine, Long Beach State, Pepperdine, Arizona and Miami.
MISCELLANEOUS
Oxnard College hosts poker tournament
Oxnard College will hold a Texas Hold 'em poker tournament on Sunday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 600 S. D St., Oxnard.
Major prizes will be awarded. Entry fee is $100 for the first 180 players. Sponsor tables are available for $300. Information: Roger Frash at 484-2531.
SOFTBALL
Two Marmonte players sign letters of intent
Marmonte League softball players Samantha Fischer of Simi Valley High and Nora Sobczak of Westlake High have each signed collegiate letters of intent this week.
Fischer, a shortstop, will attend Loyola Marymount. Sobczak, an infielder, has signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Jenna Becerra, a pitcher/shortstop from Westlake High, is scheduled to sign her letter of intent with Stanford next week, said Westlake coach Lynn Baum.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Simi Valley's Turner named ACC back of the week
Maryland sophomore quarterback Chris Turner of Simi Valley was voted Atlantic Coast Conference back of the week for the second time after leading the Terrapins to a 45 upset win over No. 8 Boston College on Saturday night.
Turner, who played high school ball for Chaminade Prep in West Hills, completed 21 of 27 passes for 337 yards. His 77.8 completion percentage was the eighth highest single- game number in the ACC this season. It was Turner's fifth start.
Maryland (5-5, 2-4) will play at Florida State (6-4, 3-4) today.
