Oregon QB Dixon out for rest of season

Dennis Dixon will have season-ending surgery on the left knee that buckled early in second-ranked Oregon's upset loss to Arizona, spoiling his chance to win the Heisman Trophy.

The quarterback tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Oregon's Nov. 3 victory over Arizona State, according to coach Mike Bellotti, but he had rested it and felt as if he was ready to play Thursday night against the Wildcats.

BASEBALL

Dodgers add four more coaches to Torre's staff

New manager Joe Torre and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed their coaching staff, retaining pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and first-base coach Mariano Duncan, hiring Bob Schaefer as bench coach and promoting Ken Howell to bullpen coach.

In addition, the team hired Rick Ragazzo as special assistant to the general manager.

Braves trade reliever Villarreal to Astros for outfielder Anderson: The Atlanta Braves traded reliever Oscar Villarreal to the Houston Astros for speedy outfielder Josh Anderson.

Izturis' $5.85 million option declined by Pirates: Cesar Izturis' $5.85 million option was declined by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who will pay the infielder a $300,000 buyout.

Giants bring back Walker: The San Francisco Giants re-signed right-handed reliever Tyler Walker to a one-year contract.

Former Reds player, broacaster Nuxhall dies at 79: Joe Nuxhall, the youngest major leaguer at age 15 and later a beloved broadcaster as "the ol' left-hander" in Cincinnati died on Thursday. He was 79.

TENNIS

Federer extends his mastery over Roddick

Defending champion Roger Federer extended his mastery of Andy Roddick, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the Masters Cup in a match played largely for pride at Shanghai, China.

Both players already earned semifinal berths from the Red Group.

ATP seeks to combat gambling with new rule: Tennis players must notify officials within 48 hours if they hear any information about gambling or match-fixing under a new ATP rule.

GOLF

Sorenstam ends season without a victory

Annika Sorenstam was eliminated in a 3-for-2 playoff in the ADT Championship at West Palm Beach, Fla., ending her year without a victory for the first time since 1994.

Sixteen players advanced to today's third round with their scores wiped clean.

Rhoden, Jones are medalists at Champions Q-School: Former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden shared medalist honors with Gene Jones in the Champions Tour's National Qualifying Tournament at Coral Springs, Fla., securing a spot next year into open qualifiers at all co-sponsored events.

Harrington, Poulter share Dunlop Phoenix lead: Defending champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland shot a 5-under 65 for a share of the lead with England's Ian Poulter in the Dunlop Phoenix at Miyazaki, Japan.

Karlsson takes four-shot lead at Hong Kong Open: Sweden's Robert Karlsson shot his second straight 6-under 64 to take a four-stroke lead in the Hong Kong Open.

SPEEDSKATING

German sets world record in women's 500

German speedskater Jenny Wolf beat her own world record in winning the women's 500 meters at the Essent ISU World Cup at Calgary, Alberta.

Wolf was timed in 37.02 seconds, lowering her mark of 37.04 set March 10 in Salt Lake City.
