Pairings unkind to water polo teams

Four ranked Division IV boys' water polo teams were shortchanged in the postseason draw, said Agoura High coach Dustin Litvak.

The pairings, announced Sunday by the CIF-Southern Section, had no direct affect on the Marmonte League champion Chargers, who were seeded No. 1.

The girls' volleyball brackets were also released Sunday. Girls' tennis and eight-man football draws will be revealed today.

What bothered Litvak was how the draw played out for some area teams.

In the last section rankings two weeks ago, Tri-Valley League champion Oaks Christian and Marmonte League runner-up Royal were ranked No. 3 and No. 4.

"I didn't expect to see Oaks Christian and Royal possibly playing each other in the second round," said Litvak.

Oaks Christian opens at home Thursday at 3:15 p.m. against Oxnard, while Royal hosts Santa Ynez.

"I thought that Oaks Christian would be on our side of the draw," said Litvak.

The pairing committee avoids placing the top two teams from the same league in the same half of the draw. A fairer draw would have seen Royal seeded No. 3 and Oaks Christian seeded No. 4, according to Litvak.

Instead, Pac-7 champion Arroyo Grande was seeded fourth.

In one of three Division IV wild-card games, Westlake will be on the road Tuesday against Palos Verdes. The winner advances to a first-round game Thursday at Arroyo Grande.

"I was surprised to see Westlake and Palos Verdes playing each other in a wild-card game," said Litvak. "Both teams were ranked in the top eight in the division late in the year."

Channel League champion Ventura was seeded third in the Division II boys' water polo bracket.

The 19-5 Cougars, the 2006 Division II runner-up, opens the playoffs Thursday at home against Sage Hill.

Oaks Christian, Oak Park and Malibu are the only area seeded teams in the girls' volleyball playoffs.

The Tri-Valley League champion Oaks Christian Lions open the Division III-AA playoffs at home Tuesday against the winner of today's wild-card game between Barstow and Palmdale.

Oak Park, the Tri-Valley runner-up, is the III-AA's No. 3 seed. Oak Park will be at home Tuesday against Morro Bay.

La Reina, which had been ranked high in III-AA earlier in the season, travels to La Quinta/Westminster on Tuesday.

Malibu is the No. 4 seed in IV-AA. The Frontier League champion opens at home against Chadwick.

Five Marmonte League teams made the field for the I-AA playoffs.

Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks could face No. 3 seed Redondo in the second round. A similiar fate awaits Marmonte runner-up Westlake. If Westlake wins its opener against Millikan, the Warriors would be on the road Thursday against No. 1 seed Mira Costa, the 2006 I-AA runner-up.

Pacific View League champion Oxnard drew a home game Tuesday against Laguna Hills in the first round of the II-AA playoffs.

Cornerstone Christian, the Omega League champion, will host Big Pine in a V-A first-round match.
