Rotary Club to host re-enactments of five Civil War battles

Five of the most famous battles of the Civil War will be re-enacted Nov. 10 and 11 at an event sponsored by the Rotary Club of Moorpark.

The first engagement at noon Nov. 10 will be Antietam, the Bloody Lane. It will be followed at 3 p.m. with a re-enactment of the first day of Shiloh, and at 5 p.m. with the re-enactment of Cold Harbor.

Spectators can expect to see infantry clashes, cavalry charges, artillery barrages and movie-quality pyrotechnic explosions throughout the battles.

The fourth engagement, at noon Nov. 11, will be Antietam, Burnside's final assault, and the fifth, at 2:30 p.m., will be Franklin.

This is the seventh year the club has held the event. It will be at Tierra Rejada Ranch, 3370 Sunset Valley Road, Moorpark, just behind the entrance to Underwood Family Farms. The gates will open at 10 a.m. both days.

Vendors and refreshments will be available for breaks between battles. Visitors can inspect both the Union and Confederate camps and learn additional details about these pivotal battles from the Civil War re-enactors.

There will be a ceremony after the first battle Nov. 11, Veterans Day, to honor veterans. A parade of all the re-enactors along with a 21-cannon salute is planned.

All veterans in uniform or with any veteran identification can receive a $5 discount off the daily fee. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for schoolchildren. Children 5 and younger are admitted free.

Daily tickets can be purchased online at www.moorparkrotary.com, for a $2 discount, good for up to four people.
