Power outage reported in Ventura

A transformer failed in Ventura this morning and left 1,496 Southern California Edison customers without power for about 30 minutes, authorities said.

Lights went out in midtown Ventura at 9:24 a.m. All but 17 energy company customers near had power back by about 10 a.m., said Rudy Gonzales, a regional manager for the energy company.

Gonzales said he expects those remaining customers, located near Arroyo Verde Park, to have power back by about 3 p.m.

It was not clear this morning what caused the transformer to fail, he said.

Dianne Lamprecht said she was sitting at her computer at her home near Arroyo Verde Park this morning when she heard two explosions. She went outside and saw a transformer at the park in flames, she said. Her power was still out this morning.

Ventura College was briefly affected by the outage, said Alisa Moore, a spokeswoman for the college.

Power went out at the school about 9:30 a.m., and students in dark classes were moved to locations with more natural light, Moore said.

No classes were cancelled, and lights at the school were back on by 10 a.m, she said.
