Baseball notebook: Bonds would skip Hall induction if there's an asterisk

Barry Bonds would boycott Cooperstown if the Hall of Fame displays his record-breaking home run ball with an asterisk.

That includes skipping his potential induction ceremony.

"I won't go. I won't be part of it," Bonds said in an interview with MSNBC that aired Thursday night. "You can call me, but I won't be there."

The ball Bonds hit for home run No. 756 this season will be branded with an asterisk and sent to the Hall. Fashion designer Marc Ecko bought the ball in an online auction and set up a Web site for fans to vote on its fate. In late September, he announced fans voted to send the ball to Cooperstown with an asterisk.

Of course, the asterisk suggests Bonds' record is tainted by alleged steroid use. The slugger has denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. Fans brought signs with asterisks to ballparks this season as he neared Hank Aaron's career home run mark.

Angels re-sign coaches to multiyear extensions: The AL West champion Los Angeles Angels are bringing back their entire coaching staff.

The Angels said they had re-signed Ron Roenicke (bench), Mike Butcher (pitching), Dino Ebel (third base), Alfredo Griffin (first base), Mickey Hatcher (hitting) and Orlando Mercado (bullpen) to multiyear extensions. Bullpen catcher Steve Soliz also will return.

Zumaya has major shoulder surgery, out until midseason: With the California wildfires closing in on his parents' house, Joel Zumaya went up to the attic and tried to salvage a few things for his father.

Moments later, his 2008 season was in jeopardy.

A heavy box fell on top of the Detroit Tigers reliever, injuring his pitching shoulder and forcing him to have major surgery Wednesday in San Diego. He is expected to be sidelined until midseason.

Orioles decline 2008 option on right-hander Benson: The Baltimore Orioles cut ties with Kris Benson, declining their $7.5 million option on the right-hander.

Benson, who missed the 2007 season with a torn labrum, files for free agency later in the day and will receive a $500,000 buyout. He made 30 starts for the Orioles in 2006, going 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA, after being acquired from the New York Mets in a trade.

Padres decline Mackowiak's $3.25 million option: The San Diego Padres declined outfielder Rob Mackowiak's $3.25 million option for next season, making him eligible to become a free agent.

The Padres chose instead to pay a $300,000 buyout.

Mackowiak was acquired from the Chicago White Sox on July 31 for minor league right-hander Jon Link. Mackowiak played in 28 games with San Diego, batting .196 with two RBIs.

Former batting champ Lansford hires as Giants hitting coach: Former AL batting champion Carney Lansford was hired to become the Giants' new hitting coach.

Lansford, a five-time All-Star who won the batting title in 1981, received a two-year contract to replace Joe Lefebvre on manager Bruce Bochy's staff.

Giants GM says signing A-Rod unlikely: Giants general manager Brian Sabean plans to "kick the tires" to determine the feasibility of signing free agent Alex Rodriguez, but characterized the team's chances of acquiring the slugger as "a reach."

With Bonds' tenure in San Francisco over after 15 seasons, there has been speculation that the Giants could try to replace baseball's home run king with the player considered to have the best chance to break Bonds' record.

Former Yankees executive Swindal pleads no contest to DUI: Former New York Yankees executive Steve Swindal pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of alcohol. He agreed to a suspended driver's license for six months and one year of probation.

The 52-year-old Swindal once was designated as George Steinbrenner's successor to head of the Yankees. The team bought him out after one of the owner's daughters filed for divorce from Swindal.
