SOLVANG — Thick fog and cold greeted the 81 golfers who showed up at the River Course at the Alisal for Thursday's CIF-Southern Section Girls' Golf Northern Individuals.

Oxnard High's Janelle Song said she kept thinking of warm foods like soup to get her mind off the cold.

While the round didn't start well for Song, who made a bogey on her first hole, the talented senior turned in a strong performance, firing a 3-over 75, allowing her to easily advance to next Thursday's CIF-SS finals at Diamond Bar Golf Course.

Forty-five players from Thursday's tournament earned a trip to the finals, including four from Ventura County. Other local players advancing included Oak Park's Danielle Kang, La Reina's Kelsey Conway and Oaks Christian's Remy Molyneux. Five players finished at even-par 72 to tie for medalist honors.

Song said her goal coming into the day was simply to advance to next week's CIF-SS finals, but Song wasn't happy with Thursday's round.

"It wasn't good, because I am so close to playing really good," Song said. "I'm a little frustrated, but I think with a little more practice I will be all right."

It was an up-and-down day on the greens for Song. She said the highlight was making a 15-foot putt for par on the seventh hole.

Kang was also frustrated by the slick Alisal greens, missing several short putts. Her round of 5-over 77 easily advanced her to the finals, but she was still unhappy with the way she performed Thursday.

"Besides my driver, nothing was working," Kang said.

"I would be in the fairway 120 yards from the green and not hit the fairway. On the greens, I could not read them at all, I kept playing all these breaks that just weren't there."

This was only Kang's second tournament in the last three months. She took some time off after a busy summer that included qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open. Because of the layoff, she felt like she has some rust on her game, so she said her round at the qualifying tournament was OK.

Kang earned her spot in Thursday's Divisional event by firing a 3-under 69 at a Rio Hondo Country Club to win the CIF-SS freelance qualifier. Kang won the event by five strokes. She qualified as a freelance player because while she represents Oak Park, she must play as an individual because Oak Park does not field a girls' golf team.

Conway finished with a 79, but it was a round where she said she had to battle on every hole with every shot.

"Everything was off, I did nothing well," Conway said.

Molyneux's goal was to post a round in the 70s, but back-to-back bogeys on her final two holes derailed that dream. However, her 81 allowed her to easily advance to the finals, leaving her with a smile from ear to ear.

"I'm happy to advance, and overall I feel really good about the way I played," Molyneux said. "I wasn't really nervous today. Making it through to the next round, after playing against so many good players, gives me a lot of confidence going into next week."

Simi Valley's Amanda Hawes was one of 12 local players who came up short in their bid to earn a spot in the finals. Hawes finished with an 88. It was a disappointing end to a great season for Hawes, who last week captured the Marmonte League individual title.

La Reina junior Kristina Cheung also had a long day, firing a 91. Cheung said she didn't hit anything solid all day.
