Woman hit, killed on Hwy. 101; police suspect driver was drunk

A 54-year-old Ventura woman was killed Wednesday night when a man suspected of drunken driving hit her as she walked on the shoulder of a Highway 101 offramp near her disabled vehicle, authorities said.

Blake Latimer was walking on the right shoulder of the Seaward Avenue exit from northbound Highway 101 in Ventura about 11:40 p.m. when Chance Hurak, 21, of Port Hueneme hit her with his car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Hurak stopped and tried to help Latimer, but she died at the scene, CHP Officer Ben Avila said.

Officers arrested Hurak on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said. He was being held Thursday in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

NEWBURY PARK

Fundraiser to benefit family of 8-year-old girl stabbed in neck

A fundraiser is scheduled at Sharky's Mexican Grill in Newbury Park to raise money for the family of an 8-year-old girl stabbed in the neck by a man who broke into her home last month.

Sharky's plans to donate 20 percent of the proceeds from customers who bring in fliers about the fundraiser Sunday and Monday to the Newbury Park Danville Family Donation Fund.

The fundraiser will help the family offset medical expenses for the girl, who was seriously wounded in the attack Oct. 25 at her home on Danville Avenue in Thousand Oaks.

A 19-year-old Newbury Park man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing the girl and her mother, and another person in a separate incident.

Sharky's is at 1930 Newbury Road. The fund is also accepting checks made out to The Newbury Park Danville Family Donation Fund, 21600 Oxnard St., Suite 1760. Woodland Hills, CA 91367.

OXNARD

Man arrested after carjacking, crash into taxi during chase

Oxnard police arrested a man on suspicion of carjacking Wednesday night after he broadsided a taxi while fleeing from officers, authorities said Thursday.

The carjacking was reported at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 2800 block of Saviers Road in Oxnard, police said. A woman was sitting in a car while her friend, the car's owner, used a nearby bank machine. A stranger entered the vehicle and brandished a knife, Oxnard police said. The woman got out of the car, and the man drove off.

About an hour later, police spotted the car near Rose Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard and tried to pull it over. The driver refused to stop and ran several red lights before hitting a taxi at Rice Avenue and Fifth Street, police said.

Guillermo Magana was arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of carjacking and evading arrest, police said. The taxi driver was taken to a local hospital.
