El Rio, Simi Valley earn softball championships

El Rio and Simi Valley combined for five championships in the Thousand Oaks Memorial Girls Softball Memorial Weekend Tournament.

El Rio defeated Sylmar 10-3 in the 10-and-under Silver Division. El Rio defeated Westlake Agoura 5-1 and Sylmar edged Santa Paula 5-4 in semifinal action. El Rio finished 5-0 and Sylmar was 3-2.

El Rio defeated Simi Valley 9-4 in the 14-and-under Silver Division championship. El Rio (4-1) defeated Camarillo 12-2 in a semifinal game. Simi Valley () defeated Northridge 7-5 to advance to the championship game.

In the 8-and-under Silver Division, El Rio (4-1) defeated Hart 10-3 for the championship. Hart finished 3-1-1. Hart defeated Camarillo 11-1 in a semifinal game and El Rio defeated Sylmar 9-3 in the other semifinal.

Simi Valley edged Northridge 7-6 in the 8-and-under Gold Division championship. Simi Valley (4-1) edged Hart 4-3 in a semifinal game. Northridge defeated Thousand Oaks in the other semifinal. Northridge finished 4-1.

Simi Valley won the 14-and-under Gold Division with a 4-3 win over Westlake Agoura. Simi Valley (5-0) defeated Thousand Oaks 9-1 to advance to the finals. Westlake Agoura defeated Los Alamitos 5-2 in the other semifinal game.

Northridge defeated Bakersfield 8-5 for the 12-and-under championship. Northridge (5-0) defeated Simi Valley 7-0 in a semifinal game. Bakersfield edged Los Alamitos 6-5 to reach the title game. Los Alamitos was 4-1.

Hart edged Simi Valley 1-0 for the 10-and-under Gold Division championship. Hart defeated Northridge 4-2 and Hart defeated Los Alamitos 7-1 in the semifinal round. Hart finished 5-0 and Simi Valley was 4-1.

More softball: The Southern California Diamonds will host the Tourney by the Sea on Saturday and Sunday at Camino Real Park in Ventura. Divisions include 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under for Gold level teams.

Camarillo Tournament: The Camarillo Girls Softball Association will host a tournament today through Sunday with games being played at Mission Oaks Park, Freedom Park and Camarillo High.

In today's 12-and-under Gold Division, Moorpark will play Camarillo at 6 p.m. and Ventura plays Thousand Oaks at 7:45 p.m.

Water polo team: Royal High's Scott Snyder and Rio Mesa's Danny White made the top 15 national cadet team and will play in Europe in three weeks and the Junior Pan American Games in August. The players were born in 1991 or later. Maxx Bricklin, a Malibu resident, and a student at Harvard-Westlake was also named to the team.

Fast track: Benjamin Dixon of the Oxnard Stars placed third in the Youth Boys 400meters at the Los Angeles Jets Invitational track meet with a time of 54.10 seconds.

Dixon, 13, is the fastest seventh grader in the nation. Dixon was the Ventura County Conference Varsity Finals champion in the 400. Dixon will train for the Summer Junior Olympics.
