After two days of searching canyons from Malibu to Mulholland, friends and family of an Agoura Hills man who disappeared were retracing his steps Tuesday.

Jonathan Richard Varble, 24, was last seen at Bogie's Nightclub on Agoura Road in Westlake Village around midnight Saturday.

Varble, who lives on Oak Creek Lane in Agoura Hills, was last heard from when he called a friend between 2 and 2:30 a.m., saying he would be at the friend's home in five minutes, friend and former co-worker Brenda Tang said.

Varble has not been heard from since.

Authorities are asking that anyone with information come forward.

"We're still actively investigating," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Detective T. Abraham. "We are still following up on any area we can."

Search parties initially scoured the canyons.

"He might have gone down there to clear his head," Tang said.

On Monday, rescuers had to pull Varble's ex-fiancee from a hillside in the Las Virgenes area after she climbed down it to check out a car at the bottom and couldn't make it back up.

By Tuesday afternoon, Tang said, the focus had shifted to retracing Varble's steps.

Varble is self-employed and worked for several years as a counselor in the Agoura Hills office of Kentucky-Western University, an online, distance-learning school.

Jennifer Burns, a friend and former co-worker, said Varble is a charismatic and outgoing person.

"He has the world at his fingertips right now," she said. "He is such a smart businessman."

Tang said Varble "has a ton of friends." She said that she and the family wanted to extend their gratitude to all of the people who turned out to help in the search.

"He's an outgoing person," she said. "He is a very personable guy. Everybody loves him."

Varble is described as 6 foot 2 inches, 205 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has Chinese characters tattooed on his inner bicep.

He was last seen wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, blue denim jeans and black shoes.

He drives a silver and gray, 2006 Infiniti G-35 with California license plate number 5UCF136.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. H. Chilstrom or Sgt. A. Brackpool, with the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, Missing Person's Detail, at 323-890-5500.

I met Johnny saturday nite at Bogies. He was a very nice guy, a true gentlemen, was not drunk, or for that matter, drinking a lot at all. We hung out, chatted, laughed, I found him to be full of life and a really cool guy. I am extremely saddened by what happened and my heart goes out to his family. People should not assume just because he was at a bar that he got behind the wheel drunk. I had one drink and then coffee, so my judgement of character of him was pure and real. I am so sorry this has happened.
Love and prayers
