One bad inning costs Cornerstone Christian
One bad inning.
That was all it took to end the championship dreams of the Cornerstone Christian softball team.
Faith Baptist used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Cornerstone Christian 5-2 in the CIF-SS Division VII semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at Canoga Park.
"We weren't hitting our spots, and every time we missed, they got a hit," Cornerstone Christian coach Dean Drulias said. "Take your hats off to them because they took advantage of their opportunities."
Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Christine Yamek drove in Jessie Castro with a base hit. But Faith Baptist (20-8) clinched its ticket to the final three innings later with its five-run onslaught against Castro (1).
"I love her and she did a great job all year. She just had one bad inning," Drulias said of Castro. "She is human, and that is just part of the game."
Cornerstone (15-4) scored its other run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk, but Faith Baptist pitcher Trinity Cuff (17-7) managed to escape any further damage.
Cornerstone was making its second consecutive semifinal appearance. Although the Eagles suffered another defeat, the performance was much more competitive than last year's 18-0 loss.
"It's a little tougher to swallow this year because we had a chance if we could have gotten a few clutch hits at the right time," Drulias said. "I told the girls the next couple of days will be tough, but in time they will realize getting to the semifinals is a feat in itself."
