Wright selected as Buena AD

Tina Wright was named as Buena High's athletic director, announced Principal Kyunghae Schwartz.

Wright succeeds Joe Vaughan, who has retired as the longtime Buena girls' basketball coach and athletic director.

A former coordinator of football and basketball facility operations at San Jose State University, Wright is completing her first year as a math teacher at Buena.

She was unanimously selected by a seven-person search committee.

"I was impressed by her enthusiasm, her passion and her bulldog spirit," said Schwartz.

"She is an excellent math teacher. The students love her. She makes math relevant to their real lives and interests."

After applying for the AD position, Wright began a dialogue with Vaughan to extract as much insight about the job as possible. She attended a Channel League meeting with Vaughan and Schwartz.

"Joe has promised to help her out when needed," said Schwartz. "We're lucky to have that generous effort from Joe in his retirement."

Ten inducted into St. Bonaventure hall

Ten new members have been inducted into the St. Bonaventure Athletic Hall of Fame.

The school's second induction class includes outgoing principal Brother Paulinus Horkan.

Horkan retired this spring after 21 years as the school's administrator.

Others recognized for achievements and contributions to the school's athletic programs were Susanne Carey-Cooper, Tom Cobey, Joseph Harper, Anthony Luna, Priscilla Van Gundy, Tom Van Gundy, Mary O'Connor, Charles Fletcher and Ricci Ruffinelli.

Carey-Cooper won eight varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track. She was the valedictorian of the class of 1990. She set career records for rebounding and field-goal percentage for the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo women's basketball program.

Cobey was the first St. Bonaventure athlete to receive a Division I scholarship, playing for the San Jose State football program.

A Tri-Valley League boys' basketball MVP and 1984 league pole vault champion, Harper was even better in a non-high school sport. He made the 1983 Junior Olympic canoeing team as a high school junior. Harper was captain of the U.S. canoeing team in the 1996 Olympic Games.

Luna was an All-CIF back on St. Bonaventure's 1968 section championship team. He also lettered in basketball and track.

Tom Van Gundy was the quarterback for the Seraphs' 1968 championship team. He and his wife, Priscilla, have been active in more than two dozen charities.

Fletcher has been the football team doctor for the past 17 years. Ruffinelli has been involved in athletics as an official and public address announcer for 31 years, including work for the St. Bonaventure and Ventura College athletic programs.

O'Connor is a former St. Bonaventure English teacher and journalism advisor.
