Onion plant cleared after chemical leak
Firefighters early this morning finished checking for pockets of ammonia at an Oxnard onion packing plant where the chemical began leaking last night, authorities said.
Firefighters who responded to the incident at Gills Onions at 1051 Pacific Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. had cleared the building by 12:26 a.m, said Oxnard Battalion Chief Mike O'Malia.
The one plant supervisor who was hospitalized for ammonia exposure had been released by this morning, O'Malia said.
Sections of Mountain View Avenue, Pacific Avenue and Wooley Road that were closed because of the incident were also open this morning, he said.
Investigators had not determined this morning what caused the leak, which began in the plant's pump room, O'Malia said.

Does anyone know why they use ammonia at an onion plant?
I'm surprised there have been no Leek jokes.
