Ammonia leak forces evacuation of Oxnard onion plant
About 180 employees of an onion processing plant in Oxnard were evacuated and at least one required medical care Monday night after an ammonia leak in the area.
Oxnard Fire Department spokeswoman Deborah Shane said the leak occurred at Gills Onions in the 1000 block of Pacific Avenue in an industrial area of the city.
Crews were sent to the scene about 9 p.m. to deal with the incident.
Shane said the employees were taken to a shelter in the area. One individual was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital, Shane said.
The incident resulted in the closure of Mountain View Avenue from Richmond Avenue on the west to Rose Avenue on the east, and the closure of Pacific from Fifth Street on the north to Wooley Road on the south.
Gills Onions is a national company that processes and distributes fresh onion products, according to the company's Web site.
