Taylor passes Kierce to win
Greg Taylor saved the best for the last lap and passed Kevin Kierce to earn the sprint car victory at Ventura Raceway on Saturday night.
Taylor and Kierce each started the Ventura Racing Association night tied in points. When Taylor took advantage of Kierce stuck behind a lapped car, it gave Taylor the points lead with 2,160 through 10 races. Kierce is second with 2,135.
It was Taylor's fourth win of the season and 38th of his career. Taylor has never won a season championship while Kierce has a title to his credit. Kierce is still trying for his second win this season after opening the season on a winning note.
Taylor was working the high groove of the track, while Kierce was staying low.
Kierce said he has been plagued by tough luck and lost five races when he's been in the lead, but slowed by lapped traffic.
Dennis Rodriguez finished third. Reigning champion Luis Espinoza was fourth and Guy Woodward fifth.
Espinoza is third in points with 1,795. Rodriguez (1,770) and Eric Severson (1,695) round out the top five in points.
Former champion Ron Bach won his first senior sprint car feature since the 2005 season. Danny Miller was second. Tim Moon was third, followed by Bob Alderman and Bruce Douglass.
Wiley Miller leads in senior points with 1,315. Alderman is second with 1,300. Steve Stasas (1,265), Douglass (1,250) and Danny Miller (1,200) round out the top five.
Jim Scribellito won his fourth dwarf car feature this season. Scribellito started fourth and finished in front of Brent Stevens. Curt Cook was third. Ben Sheen and Rob Anderson finished in the top five.
John Lynch won the senior dwarf car feature. Defending champion Ed Niedzwiecki was second. Kevin Alverson was third. Jon Prechtl was fourth and Wes Harris fifth.
Niedzwiecki is the points leader with 1,495 through six races. Bill Van Praag is second at 1,275. Jerry Doolittle is third with 1,120.
Randy McGraw was victorious in the IMCA modified main. McGraw started seventh in the 15-lap race. Defending champion Jack Parker was second. Bill Waltman was third. Points leader Steve Smith was fourth and Damon Redman fifth.
Smith has 251 points after seven races. Parker has 247 and McGraw 238. Joe Weaver is fourth with 222 points and Redman is fifth with 217.
Austin Mero won his second straight VRA junior Focus midget race. Alex Bowman was second and Justin kierce third. Dakota Kershaw was fourth Austin Smith fifth.
Bowman leads in points with 1,080. Smith is second with 1,070. Mero is third with 1,060. Kershaw is fourth at 1,055 and Brent Owens is fifth with 955.
The USAC/CRA sprint cars will race at Ventura Raceway on Saturday. Cory Kruseman, Rip Williams, Tony Jones, Troy Rutherford, Josh Ford and a host of others will be hand. The VRA senior sprints will round out the program.
