Buenos Aires bids to defend Cal Cup crown

Ciudad de Buenos Aires warmed up to the bid for a third consecutive Men's Super Division championship field hockey title.

Led by Olympic and World Cup veterans Santiago Capurro and Juan Pablo Correa, Buenos Aires defeated the Namdhari Hockey Academy of India, 2-1, Sunday in the 36th California Cup.

The two pool winners will meet in a rematch in today's 2:45 p.m. final at Moorpark College.

Thousand Oaks resident Geronimo Cebro was inserted into the Buenos Aires lineup in the second half.

The Dirty Birds had 1-0 wins over the Pacific Sun and San Francisco, Buenos Aires defeated Mystery, 4-1, and the Pacific Sun beat San Francisco, 2-0.

The third-place men's game will be at 11 a.m.

Semifinal games in the women's Super Division today match Mexico against Malvern at 7 a.m. and Buenos Aires against defending champion Monarcas of Los Angeles.

The championship game is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. The third-place women's game will be played at 12:15 p.m.

In key women's games Sunday, Mexico defeated Monarcas, 1-0, and Malvern tied Buenos Aires, 1-1.

In the fifth-place women's game, Rush' D beat California, 3-1.

At stake in the men's and women's Super Division is a $5,000 first-place prize.

The under-19 men's final will be at 9:15 a.m.

Saturday's games in 12 divisions were held at Moorpark College and Cal Lutheran.

An awards ceremony will be held at 4 p.m.
